--25a Ford bétaillère [Ford Livestock Truck] (1950-1953)

I was finally able to locate one these somewhat difficult to find trucks a short while ago, so I now have my little French Ford truck collection almost complete. It is properly called the Ford 25a Betaillere, and was made only from about 1950 through 1952. I have always been very fond of the light metallic blue that the French factory used on many models in the 1950's, so was glad to finally acquire a nice sample. There is typically nice detailing, as was usually the practice with the French Dinky's....note the appearance of the bolt heads showing on the vertical uprights of the stake bed....a very nice touch.
For fun, I am also showing it between two of its English cousins......the 30n Dodge Farm Wagon and 25g, the Market Gardner's Van.

First, here is a picture from the 1952 French Dinky Toys catalog

Fantastic mate!
Really lovely set of French Fords, a great casting as you say.
I really must get a couple, the covered wagons are superb.

Terry - a very nice collection and very well photographed! Top marks.

I presume you also have the larger version of the "farmer's truck" with the Leyland Comet, Although it would look a little out of place with all those other very nice 1:64 examples

Nice to see you back online again.
Kind regards

Bruce and Chris--Thanks so much for the nice compliments and good to be back here again after a hiatus. I thought about including the Leyland Comet Lorry, with the stake bed, but just decided it did not fit with the others, at least in a photographic sense....it certainly fits with the subject.
I think it is interesting that the French Meccano factory decided to make so many different variation of the Ford truck and then so a somewhat similar program with the Studebaker truck at almost the same time. A fair amount of overlap between the two, but it also created a great collecting potential for us!

Hi Terry,
Good to have you back mate,
Couldn't agree more, compared to the French range the English Austin, Dodge, etc were very limited, though I must admit a grudging respect for whoever came up with the idea of selling the Austin without the tin tilt and calling it a new model, using the same logic the Leyland test chassis could have been an Octopus with no back fitted.

Hi Terry, I overlooked this new thread. I thought you had disappeared without a trace since last December (until Jose Heraud happened to confirm my presumption that you were probably very busy cataloguing the collection). Welcome back and congratulations with this marvellous French early Ford commercials collection!
Kind regards, Jan

Like Terry, I also succeeded in finding one recently, nice ('not mint' as my wife strictly concluded) and very affordable. It is the metallic grey counterpart of this tiny model of a French Ford 'Poissy' F 69 W forward control vehicle, introduced immediately post-war in 1946. Meccano France introduced the model in 1950 and in 1953 it had left the catalogue already. This is only one of twelve various Dinky Ford models, either on short or on a longer base. Terry shows the blue metallic one with nice yellow wheels, but there is also the blue metallic one with red wheels - and these are all colours to be found as far as I'm aware.

Some photos below, one with the British family members included, like Terry's photo, but with different colours. Kind regards, Jan

Jan---A most lovely addition, and glad to see that you have discovered the charm of those early French Ford trucks.  I could not remember if you already had other versions........I happen to like the French practice of using some metallic paints, and have gone out of my way to acquire several.   A childhood Dinky collector friend had the Ford Vedette in metallic blue, and I developed an interest from that point.

These little trucks have their own charm, and there were so many defferent versions, usng both short and long wheelbase chassis.  What I noticed right away with my own betaillere was the amazing detailing of those stakes on the rear; there are bolt heads present showing the fastening of the horizontal boards.

For those that have not seen all of them, here is my little collection of French Ford trucks..............

           Best regards,  Terry

Terry that's an impressive display.

The folk at Bobigny certainly made that Ford chassis earn its keep. I don't think that there's an English Dinky equivalent in the variety of bodies applied to it. The 25 series trucks perhaps come close, along with the 25*/4** Bedford. Was the Pullmore prime mover the same casting?

A superb presentation of your Ford fleet, Terry, as usual. You have correctly concluded that this is a kind of 'discoverage' for me as, strictly speaking, a model like this does not comply with my 'collecting policy'. But it came along, in nice condition, at a very fair price, so I decided to 'make acquaintance' with this type of model. And I am not disappointed! Kind regards, Jan
