Re : Instructions for starting a new thread (topic).

Dave--I guess you are referring to my post on Jan's Journal article......One other thought.....are you creating a visible, easily accessible place on our website for these and other instructions that you have passed along? If not, I would highly recommend it, as new members, and even ourselves are not going to remember all of the various rules and conventions for posting on this site.

Terry, I wasn't referring to any specific post. I was asked by the committee to publish this set of instructions. I will see what I can do about setting up a more "easily accessible" place for this and other related information.

Just tried as you described.  All is well if one wishes to start a new Post/Topic under the existing Dinky sales numbers, English and French, but how does one start a new Post/Topic under GENERAL INFORMATION AND POSTS as these do not appear in the PDF file?

Re : Instructions for starting a new thread (topic).

Bruce,

The reason for the list (PDF file) is to keep the topics in proper order. We had to do some experimenting to come up with the listings as you see them. You will notice that small numbers have hyphens inserted at the front of the number. The Forum software sorts the topic titles correctly (human readable) if this structure is adhered to.

We did not foresee a need to provide a list for anything other than the numbered Dinky Toys.

Now to answer your question. Just do Step 2 from above and key in your topic title.

Re : Instructions for starting a new thread (topic).

Dave

Many thanks for your written advice.  Actually I had experimented and came up with the same conclusion!

However, with the numbered Dinky Toys, are there any plans to combine several topics on a specific Dinky model?  For instance in the British Commercial Vehicles there are 9 topics for the 581 and 980 Maudeslay Horsebox "Express Horse Van" etc.  Included is one from me, and yet I did not start a new Thread on the old website - I simply replied to a previous Post.

While I have your attention, the title was not used by Meccano an I am referring to the manufacturer Maudeslay.

There are numerous others as well, starting with 22c with its four topics, 25m and 410 Bedford End Tipper with its Five topics,  25x and 430 with two and so forth.  It would then reduce the number of pages!

Kind regards

Re : Instructions for starting a new thread (topic).

Bruce,

I have not yet figured out a way to "merge" posts which belong to one topic but have been named (topic title) something different.

I have the ability to move topics from one forum to another but do not have the ability to move posts.

Many of these "odd" topic titles came from the old website. The best way to clean this up would be for the original posters to repost under the correct topic title then delete the post from the misnamed title. If necessary I do have the ability to delete posts but I would not exercise that option unless directed by either the original poster or the DTCA committee.

Re : Instructions for starting a new thread (topic).

Dave

I have absolutely no idea how the old website was transferred to the new site, but in regard to "581 AND 980 HORSE BOX 1953-1960" except for the first topic written by our late friend Peter Golden, the remaining seven topics are in fact a continuous discussion.  I am not certain whether the discussion continued with Peter's opening topic or whether Terry opened a new topic on the same subject, but it is quite clear that each of us, Terry, Rob, Jan, Jacques and me had a continuous discussion on Terry's magnificent Horse Box.

The mention of Maudslay etc should not appear as the title of the topic, simply the title of the model as Meccano provided it, "HORSE BOX for the 581 and "HORSE VAN" for 981. Of course we must "thank" Meccano for giving us such a confusing issue! It is possible that H Hudson Dobson may have requested this change for the American market. I base this assumption on the inscription on the side of Terry's 980 box.  It has been properly inscribed during the printing process and not the normal sticker. I want to include this paragraph in the 581/980 topic, but I do not know which one it should be! It has to be included in the discussion on the Horse Box/Horse Van topic but will have to wait until further advice.

I am sending you an email direct with all these discussions in chronological order and how they should appear in the new website.

You did mention that all of us will have to copy our Post, and transfer it to a new Topic.  This is very complicated and requires all five of us to "do our thing". Surely a simpler method would be is to go back to the old website, and transfer the contents of "581 and 980 HORSE BOX" again in the hope that it will come across as it was on the original website and as copied on my forthcoming email.

As it stands now, without a drastic change taking place, anyone wishing to continue a discussion on this model has a choice of EIGHT topics/threads in which to place his/her Post/Discussion.

Kind regards

Re : Instructions for starting a new thread (topic).

Hello Dave and Jan Werner

I miss the instruction in this topic on how to create a new topic when it is not included in the PDF list. When, where and how exactly the dashes should be placed in front of the subject, because that is where most mistakes are made and the subjects do not appear in the correct numerical order. Jan Werner has already explained this to me once, but I can not find it where it is. This explanation should not be lacking in this subject to allow the placement of subjects to proceed smoothly. Now that Jan is working on improving the website, perhaps Jan may still be able to add this, with thanks to all the work he has already done.

Kind regards, Jan Oldenhuis

Re : Instructions for starting a new thread (topic).

Hello Jan, dashes only have to be used when starting a model-related topic/thread. In principle all possible Dinky Toys have been included in that pdf-list. These dashes are needed in order to get a numerical listing according to catalogue/reference numbers of those models. Free, non-model-related topics need no dashes, they will sort alphabetically within a folder, at the end of the models listing.

A model reference number needs to have four digit positions in order to sort numerically correctly in the folder list. If this number consists of less digits it has to be completed by use of prefix dashes (no space between dash and following number). So:

1 Station Staff will have to be formulated in the header as ---1 Station Staff

17 Passenger Train Setwill have to be formulated as --17 Passenger Train Set

140 Morris 1100 will have to be formulated as -140 Morris 1100

1018 Atlantean Bus will remain the same as the four positions are all used.

This is all irrespective of letter extensions, it's all about the digits, So:

1b Guard will, like 1 Station Staff, also have three additional dashes, ---1b Guard

17b Tender will have two additional dashes, --17b Tender

140b Rover 75 Saloon will have one additonal dash, -140b Rover Saloon

I hope for the time being this will be clear and sufficient. Anybody uncertain about using the correct formulation of a new topic header or attribution to the correct forum or folder: do not worry, I will try to monitor new postings and make the necessary corrections if necessary. Kind regards, Jan
