Hello Mark

I have not yet seen a special box for the code 2 451 or 449 road sweeper. Could you please post a photo of this box ?

Jacques

Hi Jacques,

I do not have a picture and I saw it on ebay some years back. The box was in very poor condition and sold very quickly. Looking back I should have printed a copy of the page to have the photo. I have never seen one again.

There are quite a few things to write about the models 449 and 451.

The promotionnal model for Johnston is a code 2. yellow cabs and rear body models with opening doors # 451 were delivered to Johnston who provided and applied the paper stickers. Meccano would certainly not have had special boxes for such a model.

I do not think that there was ever a special box for the Johnston promotionnal. Do you rmember which type of box this was ?
• end flaps box
• hanging box
• card tray with clear lid

There is an other promotionnal for made for "VACU-SWEEP" which is also all yellow. Although there is no evidence, this is probably also a code 2 model with stickers applied by who ever Vacu Sweep is or was. Although this model has opening cab doors and is a # 451, it has been packed in a # 449 hanging type box and yellow stickers have been applied probably by Vacu-Sweep to hide the name Johnston on the box front ends.

There is a misunderstanding about this model because this model which has opening cab doors and is a # 451has been packed in a # 449 hanging box. Vectis who has not read the Dinky Toys Encyclopaedia does not seem to have noticed the difference sales this model as a # 449.

I will copy this post to the proper # 449 and # 451 threads.

Hi Jacques. The JOHNSTON promotional box I saw years back was the all card end flap box, same size as the first issue all card 1971 regular Dinky toys box. It was not the last issue hanging box nor the second issue bubble pack box. It was a mess. Missing end flaps, and very tatty. It had JOHNSTON sweepers printed on it and was not a homemade piece. It would only be logical that such a box was made for Johnston to give out to customers as this machine was very advanced for its day and, a good seller for Johnston. Obviously it was very rare box that was most likely made in very limited numbers for a very short time.and Meccano probably did not make the box but some other supplier did.

Regarding the VACUSWEEP version, I will be telling the fascinatating story about it in a future issue of the Journal so stay tuned.
