--40e and 153 Standard Vanguard Saloon (1948-60)

Here are my Vanguard family.

With and without wheel-disk.

Some more informations :
The three Vanguards without wheel-disk have a small letters base plate and a smooth inside roof.

The brown one, on the box, has also a small letters base plate and a smooth inside roof.
The cream one, has a big letters base plate and "Vanguard" engraved on the inside roof.
The blue with the cream hubs, has big letters base plate and "Vanguard" on the inside roof.
The blue with fawn hubs, has big letters base plate and a smooth inside roof.

So, there are, at least, 4 variants of the Vanguards :
1) the oldest, ref. 40E without wheel-disk made around 1948
2) the brown one ref. 40E made around 1950
3) the blue with fawn hubs, made around 1954
4) the two others, made also around 1954

That's all I know on these beautifull little cars.

Cheers

Hi all,
There's the block that was added on later variations behind the rear bumper too, you can clearly see it on the later version in the photo above.
Lovely model, still need a few of these including, of course, a Maroon one.

Hi Richard,
What colour are the wheels on the top row far right model? They look Blue - Green?

Yes Terry. I forgot to mention the axle clip ! Thanks to have done it.

I did not know about the stiffening block behind the bumber ! Any of my Standard has that detail !
The other difference are the streaked tyres on your item.

Chris, the wheels are green but I don't think that they are original !

This morning, while entering the 1952 French trade catalogue in the Dinky Toys Encyclopaedia, I read that it was planed to make the Triumph 1800, the Standard Vanguard and the BEV Electric truck in Bobigny but this did not happen.

Jacques--Please clarify....you mean it stated somewhere in that 1952 catalog that they intended to make them in Bobigny? Was that is the very front of the catalog? That seems to indicate that they were thinking of transferring the existing dies there, instead of making them in Liverpool. Most interesting!

Hi Terry,

This is inside the trade or dealers catalog, it states that Bobigny is thinking about producing these three models. You can translate this as the dies will be shipped to Bobigny, the castings will be fitted with French base plates as was done with the Auto-Union, the Mercedes, Packard, Studebaker State Commander etc...

The exact text is :

"Nous envisageons la fabrication de deux voitures de tourisme Anglaises Vanguard et Triumph et d'un chaiot

Interesting! I wonder why it didn't happen? Maybe they were still selling well in the UK, or, they were cars you wouldn't see much of in France?, (I don't think you'd see much of the BEV in the UK to be honest!)

I have never seen a Vanguard or a Triumph in France at that time. On the other hand I remember some electric trucks with standing drivers at the Paris central market (Les Halles) and a couple of these trucks are preserved in the Cherbourg maritime museum.

A comparison of the Dinky and the real one. Not bad for 'just a toy'!

Kind regards, Jan

Jan--Great closeup shot and a wonderful example of just how good Meccano was in detailing in the early post-war years. That is such a good replica of the real car, and all those horizontal grill bars are really accurate. Nicely done!

Hi all,
Anybody here got a Maroon Vanguard? My Holy Grail as far as post war goes, but I've seen a few I didn't trust, which baseplate / bootlid / etc variation is correct for the maroon?

Photo by courtesy of Vectis Auctions.

The maroon Vanguard with fawn hubs has large print on the base.

There is also at least one with maroon hubs.

Jacques--That Vanguard looks really nice in maroon. I had never seen one before, am assuming they are somewhat rare?

Yes Richard that is the other very scarce maroon one. Which is the base plate on this one ? Large or small print ?

There is no uninteresting thread. When one starts studying a model one finds variations, rare colours etc...

As Michael Driver (President of DTCA) says : " if there are no variations, it's not a Dinky".

By the way, Michael has issued a new book about Mike Richardson. How come that there is nothing about it on this site ?

Hi Terry,
It's been on there for at least 6, maybe 12 months, way too rich for my budget, though it does look real.

Further to your post 10 months and three weeks ago, here is the Standard Vanguard on display at the Coventry Transport Museum which I visited in May 2011, leaving my wife and sister-in-law in the local Primark Store. I had a far more interesting time than looking around for clothes!

I could not tell if the Vanguard was the first version with the rear axle clip or not!!

And here is one of mine - the real thing, Dinky that is, with a very similar colour, so Meccano chose wisely!

There is a picture of the light green Vanguard on the Dinky Toys Encyclopaedia since January 23, 2013 but I do not have a date for this variation.

A curious feature of this model is that it was the only one of the post-war British saloon cars to be referred to only by its model name on the baseplate - "Vanguard" rather than "Standard Vanguard". An opposite  precedent had been set by 40a and 40b where only the makers name "Riley" and "Triumph" appeared, to be followed by 40d,f,g etc. (but no 40c) and subsequent renumberings and new additions all showing the full name of the car in question, i.e. Morris Oxford, Austin Devon and so on. Another example of the oddities that make Dinky collecting so fascinating.

variations, variations, variations ............

The name VANGUARD was cast on the ceiling of some castings but not on the early ones.

Were some of those with open rear wheel arches marked or was this marking added on the later castings with closed arches only ?

Thank you for your kind help.

Hello Jaques,

I took a good look at my Vanguards.

Only my youngest version in cream with knobbly tyres has the marking.

The oldest ones with open wheel arches in the front row of my picture (and the others) do not show the marking.

Another maroon Vanguard with closed rear wheel arches! I am still wondering if my maroon sample with open wheel arches  (recently posted in new arrivals) is genuine or not. I believe it is, but I know of only one other collector (Jose Heraud) with a similar specimen ...

Hi DTCA, This is my first ever posting so I hope I do it correctly. Joan here at Toys in Time. recently we had a visitor to our museum. He asked me to help him find out about his Dinky Vanguard. The first place I looked was the DTCA website, and here is discovered a lot of helpful information for him. It appears that he has maroon Type 2 Vanguard with closed spats. The box apprears contemporary but has no markings. I enclose (Ihope if I get it right) some photos of the car. He is interested in selling it so I wonder if any DTCA members might be interested in buying it. If so can someone please let me know the correct way to offer that to DTCA members. Many thanks for your help and interest. Kind regards, Joan Nessl
