Advantage of the new website is the considerably bigger format allowed for illustrations. So I think this is the best thread to profit from this opportunity. A random photo detail of my table display, a delightful circa 1948 scene, 1200 x 750 pixels. Kind regards, Jan

Jan--You are exactly right....the new site allows for much larger images to be displayed, as your wonderful photo shows. This is a great format for scenes such as yours. And what a wonderful nostalgic scene you portrayed....very nicely done.

Am going to try another photo from some time ago....I tried increasing the quality level to maximum, instead of high, so not sure if it will make the image too large?  I also do not know if you need to save the original image at that level, instead of an edited version, which this is............so here it is, the various Farmer's Market trucks from years ago, in a very colorful mix..........

Jan--As you can see, I accidentally posted this twice..........not sure how that happened, but now how do I delete the extra post?  I looked under edit, but did not see a delete post option anywhere.............

Hi Terry, in the edit mode there must be a button 'Remove', but that may only be useful for removing the uploaded picture. I'm not sure how to remove an entire post. May be those 'behind the buttons' can give us some advice in this. Kind regards, Jan

This is exactly why in my list of possible improvements to this site, I asked for such a "delete this post" button.

Jacques.

Jacques, Terry, before the improvement Jacques suggests will be realised, you can always remove the text and the picture(s) in the edit mode. This does not remove he basic post, but anyway the contents will be removed, and that is essentially what you wish to do. It may be helpful for others to understand that you replace the text by 'DELETED'. Kind regards, Jan

Jan---Thanks for the tip.....I did go in and do that, but we really need a "delete post" button sometime in the future.

Jan--Very nice....I never did buy that model, and have never seen one in person, but it appears that the French Dinky folks made a very nice, accurate model with it.

I tried taking a photo a few minutes ago, and when I ran it through Photoshop Elements, did some slight editing, then saved it.  It gives you a choice of saving formats, from high to maximum quality.  So I am posting the same basic photo twice, first at the lower, or high quality setting, then at the Maximum quality setting, so see if there is any discernible difference.

Terry,

With Elements, I always save my pictures at 8. the difference is only visible if later on you want to enlarge the picture.

The "delete" button is a must but also the emails and in "Recent comments" there should be only one link per topic / thread. It is a pain to clic on half a dozen links which all lead to the same topic.

Jacques----Thanks.....that is what I just found out with those 2 photos....I can't tell any difference between the two with respect to detail or clarity, so I will stay with high or 8 save setting.

About deleting posts.

The option to delete comments is not available except to moderators.  This is because of the way that the forum (and in fact, the whole website) organises its content.

Each topic is the parent of the comments that other members post in reply.  Within a topic, it is also possible to comment on a particular comment. A sub-comment, if you will.  These sub-comments are children of the corresponding comment.

The structure of a topic might look something like this;

- Topic X

- comment 1

- comment 2

- comment 3

     - comment 3.a

     - comment 3.b

     - comment 3.c

- comment 4

Topic X has four comments, but comment #3 has sub-comments also.  If the author of comment #3 deleted his comment, all the dependent children would be deleted also.   While deleting a double-comment seems to be a different issue, were the permission available, it would be available all across the site.   I will investigate to see if there is a feasible way to work around the basic architecture but, failing that, double posters can request an admin to delete any double posts or backspace their text and drop images, as Jan suggests.

Al---While I understand the logic and thinking about not being able to delete a post, due to potential existing other replies, it would still seem odd to me if, instead of deleting, one merely went back and deleted the picture, then also erased the text, which is what I finally did.....you would still have those followup replies, but now to a blank (but not deletd) posting......which also doesn't seem much better then losing them if the offending post was simply deleted. I would think members could use some descretion, and promptly delete any post not worthy of keeping. For me, the occasional double post is the most likely culprit, and it would be nice to simply delete it right away. Other times, someone might make an improper comment or erroneous one, and simply want to delete it after further thought......just my two cents!!

I don't necessarily disagree with anything you're saying, Terry.  But this is the way that the website and forum is designed. To a large extent, the website is prefab technology, a kit of parts built out of the box and painted over in a preferred colour.   The customization options can be a little deeper than the superficial and I'll need to go through a bunch of documentation to assess if a fundamental behaviour can be modified.  Until then, I just wanted to outline, in the event that it couldn't be otherwise, the reason why the whole deletion policy is what it is.

Are sub-comments necessary,

I have never heard about these before. I still think that this site is very much too complicated and that it has many useless functions, it can be simplified very much without loosing any efficiency.

Well, I'd have to say that *I* don't think sub-comments are particularly necessary.  They are, however, part of the core design of the website.

New feature

Although sub-comments must stay, I have managed to make a system alteration so that a comment can be deleted IF it has received no sub-comments.  Between the edit and reply options, you should now see 'delete".

Now, do you guys want to have email notifications about comments?  Or do you want something like a subscription where you get notifications over all topics in one of more forums (which you choose)?

Thank you, Al, for all your efforts to help improving the site and forum!

I, for me, would prefer the (rather habitual) option that once you started a thread, or stepped in later with a comment/reply, one is automatically subscribed to notification emails about new comments/replies in that thread, unless one deliberately unsubscribes with an unsubscribe button. Others may give there opinion. Kind regards, Jan

Email notifications about postings - new feature.

Hi Jan,

So now the forum should send a notification message to your email account about comments to a topic that you either started or commented on previously.  The message will also contain a link back to your account settings where you can select to receive memos about replies to all comments, just your own comments, or unsub from the topic notifications.  Well, that's the theory - let's see if it works.

How To Use

Have a look underneath the Add New Comment panel, you should see a checkbox titled "notify me when new comments are posted" with the options to get "all comments" or "replies to my comments".     By default, the box is checked with the all comments option.  I don't know if members would prefer a deliberate opt-in default  - let me know if so.

Al---I agree with Jan's comments on this, and also wanted to thank you for finding away to allow deleting a post if no sub comments have been added.....that works for me! And also thanks for continuing to make some needed improvements.....the site is now much better than when we started!

The "notify me" box is checked and the "All comments" button (is it any use ?) is selected but I have not yet received any email notification.

When answering a post, the discussion should show below with last post first so that one can refer to the previous posts.

I agree with Jan, the default setting should be Notify me. It is easy enough to uncheck the box if desired.

Size 14 for the text should also be the default setting.

Font size does not work, I have selected size 9  for te line above and 16 for this line but when saved all the text shows at size 12 !

Terry,

By X'mas we may have a decent forum and get back here all those who have left when this thingamajig was put online. There are plenty of tiny easy improvements to do like those :

Well, let's cheerfully work on this. Things are better now already than they were on the previous website!

Those who don't like it are completely free to walk away, but I don't know a better alternative to recommend to them...

Kind regards, Jan

I tested the notify email thing again, and it still seems to be working -  at least for me.

You will not get a notify about your own comments, of course.

Opting to receive ALL comments, should get notifications that everyone makes to the thread.  Opting to receive only "Replies to my comment" should get notifications only if someone replies specifically to one of your comments.   Other members may prefer that second option, Jacques, so I'm not going to suppress it.

There is some jiggling around with spacing of elements like the upload button.  Although I understand what you're esthetically saying about fitting the screen, Jacques, I must consider that other users may be viewing on phones or tablets or devices and their screens might not be ideal for having, for example, file indicia all strung together a single line.

The font size/font family thing will be investigated.
