-958 Snow Plough (1961-66)

A new one arrived this morning, and it was very dirty.
After cleaning, it can be shown on this forum.

I got it for £ 30, freight cost included ! the price of the Atlas range.

But most importantly, it IS a Dinky, not one of those cheap imitations, and well worth the thirty quid! Find an original box and your complete set would be in the same league as mine which I have owned for four years, winning it at an auction in the UK in 2011 at the bargain price of

This just seemed an appropriate purchase at this time of year. Just need a chap in the back to shovel the grit; of course this would be automated these days.

I posted the Guy snow plough one month two weeks ago under Ready for Winter, but thought not much interest.........

And here is one with silver blade and Supertoys hubs at work in Normandie.

I have read somewhere that there is an extremely rare box showing the silver blade. Can any one confirm this info ?

Have you noticed that the die of the rear bed of the Leyland Comet has been modified to create the rear bed of the snow plough ?

Never worry if nobody replies to a post you have made. I have lost count of the number of times I have posted something which I thought would have generated some interest from the membership such as casting differences, new acquisitions, new photographs, or even an unusual leaflet, or for that matter a topic under discussion and those posts have not received one response. I am thinking of starting a new thread devoted to posts that have generated no replies = interest!! :laugh: :laugh:

However it may interest you to know that I did read both of your posts, but did not have anything to offer in response and I did not wish to clutter up the Forum with idle chatter, except I wish the snow could be sent down here in Australia. We have had constant temperatures in the high 30s! We have recently returned from Longreach in western Queensland where it was over 40 degrees! Of course your winter there is our summer.

Yes, it is known that the body for the snow plough is a modified body of the Comet wagon with Hinged Tailboard. I have never seen the drawings, but they are listed on page 208 of the GBofDT. It concerns the jobs no. 13664 and 13665. The early dates of 2 June 1950 confirm that these were originally made for the Comet, as they coincide neatly with another drawing made for the no. 532 tailboard Comet exclusively, the subsequent job number 13666 of 14 July 1950. The more remarkable it is that in the GBofDT the column of 'Significant changes' says: 'none'. I cannot imagine!
'Significant changes' is a very subjective notion. I have seen many (pictures of) drawings, showing very significant changes in my eyes, but not noted as such in the GBofDT.
Is any picture known of those drawings 13664 and 13665?

Mike was right in stating that there were no significant changes as the drawing for the tailboard was a new drawing and almost certainly a new die, the drawing for the rear bed must also be a new one, the drawing numbers may prove this. These two drawings have never been modified and have had no changes at all.
Do we know the drawings numbers for the rear bed of the 532 / 932 / 418 Leyland Comet with hinged tailboard ?
The drawings for a model follow a logic of :
"Assembly" or "complete" drawing
main casting
smaller castings
other specific parts
etc...

for example :
10 149 Fire engine (Streamlined) assembly.
10 150 Fire engine (Streamlined) body.
10 151 Fire engine (Streamlined) ladder.
10 152 Bell for 25 h Streamlined fire engine
10 153 Wire for bell hook fire engine (Streamlined).

What then has been modified to the rear bed of the Comet to have a rear bed for the Snow Plough, if both the drawings and the dies are completely new?
Moreover, still, the dates of 2 June 1950 make no sense for a new (not modified) drawing of a (part of a) model which was introduced in 1961. I still do not understand ...

This is how the driver can keep an eye on the road when the plough is out of duty (except for the little diagram in some catalogues not often demonstrated with photos of the model). Kind regards, Jan

One detail on this item which often seems to be overlooked is the change which was made to the colour split at the front of the cab.  Because of the snowplough covering much of the front it isn’t immediately obvious, but in the photo below, the lorry with silver plough has the black on the front wings carried across the front panel, while the other one has a yellow front panel.

Hello Fred

Thank you for this piece of information, I supose that like me most collectors did not know about this variation. What remains to be known is if there were any trucks with:

the silver blade and yellow cab front

and any with yellow blade and black front.

In other words did the change to the cab take place at the same time as the change to the blade's colour ?

I didn’t notice this variation on my two snowploughs before.
Mine do have the same cab colours as yours.
