Hi everybody.
Does somebody know if this tractor was issued without driver in the later version ?
I got one from england, with plastic wheel hubs, perfect windows and the baseplate was not removed !
Does somebody know how was fixed the driver in the van ?
Thank you for your answer.
Cheers
Hi Richard
As far as I am aware the 688 Field Artillery Tractor was always supplied with a driver, the only change was from a metal driver to the plastic driver late in the production run.
If you look at the photograph above you will see that there are two bent over lugs coming through the baseplate, this is the attachment for the driver.
Alongside the tractor is an example of a military driver sat on his support/seat. These supports vary in height according to which vehicle the driver will occupy.
I hope this helps

Is it possible for you to add a photo of your 688 baseplate/
Thanks Dave
Here it is ...... if I succeed
No, I did not ! I try again
and here are the windows ; durty but not broken !
Soory .... dirty !
Hi Richard
Looking at the baseplate on your tractor the driver support/seat is definitely there so it must be assumed that a support without a driver was fitted and this is an assembly error which occurred at Meccano.
I have seen one of these with the driver fitted backwards!!!
Sadly, unlike stamps, errors like this do not make the Dinky valuable.
Dave
Thank you Dave.
I have one with the driver fitted backwards and I think that I sent photos to the post of "Manufacture errors".
I am going to verify.
It's in the post "factory errors" , page 7
;)
Another 688 oddity here. Of the two 697 sets I have the tractors are equipped with different towing hooks. The later windows example does not have the usual rebent hook but a regular upright one. I'm not 100% sure if this is original because the straight hook is not fully straight and might have been rebent, but in that case it would have to show a much longer piece of tin. Do others recognise this oddity in their later 688 models?
Some pictures below:
Kind regards, Jan
Jan,
I bought 3 tractors on e-bay and I am waiting for them.
One seems to be equipped with the usual hook.
I will tell you more when I will receive it.
It seems also that two of them have the yellow and red mark instead of the blue and red.
Kind regards. Richard
Hi Richard, I look forward to the results of your investigations!
Kind regards, Jan
Hi Richard
Here are two of my tractors and as can be seen they have different signs, I have seen a number with the red/yellow signs rather than the correct red/maroon of the Royal Artillery.
Best regards Dave
So, I received these last days 4 tractors and I can, now present you all my squadron.
It is very exiting to compare and study all the items.
As you stated earlier I see that two of the tractors on the front have the red/yellow signs instead of the correct red/blue Royal Artillery insignia.
I have shown one like this above. I have seen others with the red/yellow but they have always had plastic hubs.
On yours with red/yellow can you confirm whether the wheel hubs are plastic or metal.
Many thanks Dave
First discovery :
Did somebody already see the trailer base as shown on the right ?
Is it an original ? If not, do you think that somebody can manufacture this kind of piece ?
Dave K
I think this Post rightly belongs in the 687 Trailer for 25-Pounder Field Gun Thread. Buzz999 (Dave B) has made a comment later on in this Thread and perhaps a copy of his Post should also go to the Trailer Thread as the first paragraph replies to the question raised by Richard.
Also, the title for this Thread should be as Meccano described the model, 688 Field Artillery Tractor.1957-1970.
Kind regards

Second discovery (for me !)
I have 3 tractors with plastic hubs and all have the hubs for the safety tyres which are paint in black !
I got one with the traditional hook but I am very suspicious about the rivet. It looks like it's not an original one !
And what about the hubs !!! quite curious, is'nt ?
On the right, it is the rout vehicle : the driver shows is back !!
Sorry, I mean "his back" !
Here under 2 items without windows and with 2 different green colours
That' all for the moment. If you have any question....!
Kind regards
I am convinced the tractor you show has been dismantled an put back together again. The rivet and the axles are just not right.
Regarding the trailer on the right someone brought an example like this to the DTCA AGM at Gaydon in April, yours is only the second one I have ever seen.
It looks like tractors with red/yellow signs are only ever seen with plastic hubs, in other words more modern issues.
Dave
I am agree Dave. I buyed it especially for the green base trailer which was sold with it ! and I wanted to see it closer !
The second item with the red/yellow sign, that I received from england in the lot of 4 tractors, is a repainted one ! It was the bad surprise !!!
Even the sign is painted ! The seller did not advise the bidders ! It has convex metallic hubs.
You can see it on the right side !
i recently obtained this from UK E-Bay, I was surprised to find that the quad has the very last issued military type tyres ( plastic ) which I am not sure that they were available just before the quad was discontinued as a single item.
As the set of quad , ammo trailer & 25pdr howitzer were the last available certainly in my town in the early 1970's well after discontinued, I cannot remember the quad with these plastic tyres.
The quad also has the late plastic hubs and windows, the hubs are counter reacting with the plastic tyres and are in the early stages of "melting". ( similar to the Solido problem).
Can anybody confirm that these tyres were issued to the quad before it was deleted.
Hi There
I am a Dinky historian with a particular interest in the Dinky Military range from 1954 to the early 1960s and I have written numerous articles for the DTCA Journal on these vehicles over the last few years.
I have owned a number of the Quad vehicles and here is the youngest I ever owned and will date to around 1970. It is a 'factory error' item as it does not feature the Royal Artillery Red/Blue insignia but the Red/Yellow RASC insignia. It also has plastic wheel hubs and the plastic type tyres.
You are correct that these do have a chemical interaction which causes the hubs to deform exactly as the Solido ones do, although this is not usually as severe as the Solido wheels.
Hope this helps Dave
David,
Could you please have a look at the quad which you posted immediately above and tell us about it's driver. Is he driving or just looking out with his arms crossed ?
It seems that some late issues have been fitted with passengers 603 rather than with drivers with extended arms.
Jacques.
