Bruce,

I guess we will both be scrambling to bid if something similar comes up again on eBay!!

After 7 years, it must be about time for another one!

Hi all,

It has been some time, but I took some more pictures of wheel variations and here is the first. The 30d Vauhall with black ridged hubs and with silver ridged hubs. These silver painted hubs are not an easy find! The 30b Rolls Royce also comes with silver painted hubs, but sofar I could not find a decent example.

Kind regards,
Rob

Hi all,

A wheel variation on the 922/408 Big Bedford Lorry. Fawn and cream hubs. As far as I know, the cream hubs are only found on the later 408 with the yellow box. The cream hub colour is the same as fitted on the rare 408 in pink with a cream body.

Kind regards,
Rob

Hi all,

Recently picked up a pre war 23a Racing Car in orange and green with blue hubs. It is pictured alongside one with chromed hubs and green tires, shown before in this thread. Both have racing number 4, but in a different style.

Kind regards,
Rob

There have been at least two variations of the 796 Trailer for the Healey Sport Boat.

The one on the left is the common one with a third wheel at the front. The one on the right is much rarer and on this the front 'jockey wheel' has been replaced with a skid.

I suspect that this was towards the end of the production and was done as a cost cutting exercise.

Hi all,

A wheel variation of the 073 Land Rover and Horse Trailer. The other Dublo Dinky Toys have wheel variations also, but this is the only variation I have in my collection.

Hi all,

The 432 Guy Warrior Flat Truck with green wheels has been shown in a
Guy thread, but I think it belongs in this thread as well together with the common version with red wheels.

Kind regards,

Rob

Thanks Rob,
I've added this one to my Guy list, don't think I've ever seen one in the hand, the Warrior is such a lovely model, it's a shame they spoilt it by sticking a great big snow plough on it!

Is the Newmarket Horse Box unusual with plastic hubs? I recently bought one so fitted, but all the pictures I've found online so far show metal hubs. The baseplate is the later version.

The Newmarket Horse Box with plastic hubs I have never seen before. I have only seen this model with light yellow metal and with dark yellow metal hubs. I would love to see a picture of your Horse Box. There are more models with plastic hubs that are hardly ever seen like the Guy Warrior Snowplough, the Mighty Antar with Propellor and the 984/985 Car Carrier and Trailer.
Kind regards,
Rob

The wheels or hubs are one of the ways to date the Dinky Toys. The table above is certainly not complete and I would welcome any comments, additions, corrections etc... to improve it.

A similar table for the tyres could be made and perhaps mixed with the hubs table.

Thanks for your help.

Jacques.

Hello Jacques,

For your list of smooth hubs I have some additions on the pre war British.
Not only black color is know but also, very standard, blue.
Extreme rare are some other colors, red, green, maroon. These colors were only fitted for a very short time and matched the color of the models, no's 24 and 25. See also recent article in The Journal on these models. The labels of pre war boxes 24, 25, 33, showed the models with these extreme rare hubs.

In 1945/1946 the hubs on most models still were smooth, soon replaced by the ridged types.

This table is a great idea, and then you mentioned maybe combining it with the various tires. For some time the idea of a Masterm Timeline has crossed my mine, where we could have a table listing all of the major Dinky items in chronological order. For starters, we could include wheels, tires, boxes, baseplates, and maybe a few other somewhat major items. If we try to include too many things, it might become too lengthy or cumbersome, but with the above items,'it would be quite helpful to many of us.

I am curious what you and the other members think of this idea.

Regards,

Terry

Terry,

The list you are thinking of exists. I have put it on the CD in February 2010. It is a chronology of Meccano Ltd. and Dinky Toys, it includes 140 lines but as you suggest, this is too much and the idea is to have half a dozen lists with different subjects such as Wheel (hubs + tyres) features and gadgets (windows, seats, headlights, numberplates etc...), boxes, history of Meccano Ltd. .......

These lists would be on the same printable document and it would be easy to date a model.

To complete this job, I need the help of every one and I am waiting for your comments.

Jacques.

Hi all,

This time the wheel variation on the 174 Hudson Hornet in red. Cream cast hubs and spun hubs. In the middle is the rare version in plum red with spun hubs.

Hello Rob,

This is interesting but the pictures are too small. What about making a large 800 pixels wide picture for each model ?

Happy new year.

Three variations of the 152b Reconnaissance car

On the left is the extremely rare post-war version with smooth hubs and white tyres. In the middle is the common version with ridged hubs. On the right is also very rare version in the brown paint, which I belive was only ever used on export versions to the States.

I have been 'studying' the changes of wheels around the 1960s - cast metal to plastic for large vehicles, cast metal to spun aluminium to plastic on the smaller vehicles (like the 181 VW etc.). One I found was 969 BBC Extending Mast vehicle:

I wonder if 967 BBC TV Control Room came with plastic hubs? The overlapping date-wise 987 ABC TV Control Room came with metal (blue or grey) hubs or grey plastic whereas I don't think 988 TV Transmitter van came with plastic hubs and likewise 968 BBC Roving Eye?

Hi Ron,
What a nice find!! I have never seen this model with plastic hubs. It is on my wants list now! Until one finds a 967 or 968 with plastic hubs I just assume they do not exist.
Same for the 988. Does someone have a picture of one of these models with plastic hubs?
Kind regards,
Rob

I have not found any pictures of those with plastic hubs nor has Vectis.

This thread of "Wheel Variations" is a very valuable one and should be maintained and continued.

There is no reason why the thread for the 150 Rolls Royce should be removed from here.

It can be DUPLICATED in the 150 thread and that way all the threads are fully valid.

Lets be sensible about what we do, if threads are going to be lost, surely it is only right to ask the thread initiator before changes are made - that would be the courteous way to do things.

I am in complete agreement with everything you have stated, and have written so under the 158 Rolls Royce thread.

It is true that often posts get lost which are important. I am trying to find a post that someone made concerning the 660 Tank Transporter with the cut-out behind the cab. I know I have read it somewhere, but dashed if I know where I can find it! This is probably further confirmation of what Jacques would like to see happen. Make a post on a topic that is related but then put a copy under the model number itself.

The TMT website was ideal in that threads were created for every model produced by Dinky. We have to start thinking outside the square so that important information is not buried somewhere!

Kind regards

Bruce
