Wonderful racers Rob!
The carded versions have survived so well, I have '70's boxes that have never been opened that are dropping to bits!

Well we did not have to wait too long to be struck with awe - again! Not only the rare 233 with red plastic hubs but on the ultra rare card blister pack like the previous 239. Again, what a fabulous collection!

A "humble" and common model like the 14C/401 Coventry Climax Fork Lift also has some nice variations. Orange with green wheels, the scarce brown with green wheels, the rare red with red wheels and the scarce late orange with green plastic wheels and plastic driver.

Kind regards,

Rob

Hi Rob, you make most of us - also very serious Dinky Toys collectors - feel like Calimero! Now I wonder, seeing all those variations you collected, why you could resist those French made or French imported Liverpool cast Dinky Toys. In fact I am a British made Dinky Toys collector myself too, but those French versions made me cross the British-French threshold every now and then.

By the way, curious to see the wrongly placed, mirrored handle, as pictured on the French box, and the allowance permitted for (an) other colour finish(es) to be found when opening the box!

Kind regards, Jan

Hi Jan,
Very nice to see the French version of the Coventry Climax, especially the box art work! It has been difficult in the past for me not to buy French Dinky Toys. The only reason to stay firm in my choice being to be able to deepen my collection with more variations in stead of broadening it with more models. (The one exception being a French mint boxed Simca 1000, which was my first real car!)
You should not feel like Calimero, all Dinky Toys collections are special, small or large, mint or battered. We all share the passion for these wonderfull toys and the joy of collecting them. Nothing more and certainly nothing less!

Kind regards,
Rob

Rob--
Well said....we all share a common love of our Dinky Toys and collecting them, and all of our interests and collections represent different points of view and also different levels of collections. I have collected Dinky's one way or another since I was a young boy of 6, and at different times have been more ardent about it, and feel that today, I have a very nice collection, representing what appeals most to me, and what I feel I can easily afford with regards to many other needs of my family. Many of us will always be impressed with other collections, due to their size and scope, but that should not diminish how special our own collections are.
I have bought many Dinky's years ago from Keith Harvey, and talked with him on the phone several times. At one point, he invited me to come up and see his world class Dinky collection.....I have heard at various times it numbered like 10,000 different items....but regrettably, I never made time to drive the 90 miles or so to where it was housed. When I even think about that size of a Dinky collection, it numbs my mind, so I just choose not to dwell on how my collection is so insignificant compared to that. And by the way, I heard from him a few years ago that he was selling it all off, saying it was time to let it go.

Of course I agree with you. This was so to speak, in order to express my astonishment and admiration.
Besides, quite recently I have proven on the Dutch-Belgian border that the grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence:

Some more racing cars, 133 Cunningham C-5R with blue hubs and brown interior,
blue hubs with blue interior and spun hubs with brown interior. The spun hub version is surprisingly difficult to find.

Kind regards,
Rob

Not a structural matter, but still ... the one on the right was originally delivered with small smooth white tyres (like other Dinkies incidentally in the 1957/58 period):

Nice Jan.... I, for one, happen to like the white tires on a lot of the Dinky's, even though it isn't necessarily authentic. I think your Cunningham looks quite good with them.

Some variations of the 425 Bedford TK Coal Lorry. The "normal" version with red plastic hubs and a blue interior, much rarer version with blue plastic hubs and a blue interior and the scarce version with red plastic hubs and a red interior.

Rob

There were also some casting variations : large or small headlights, a letter A engraved on the cab's ceiling of some. You can not see that one.

but here is the evidence.

The Bedford TK cabs were cast in a die with two slightly different cavities. One marked "A" (left hand picture) had almost flat headlights and small indicators when the other was not marked and had semi spherical headlights and large indicators. Both cavities have been modified very early to add a reinforcement for the coal lorry roof pannel.
All six Bedford TK trucks can be found with either one or the other of these cabs.

And 434 Bedford TK Crash Truck, three later models: metallic red red hubs and red interior, metallic red grey hubs and grey interior, red with black roof red hubs and interior. The box in the middle is the last box style made for this model.

I sort of knew you would have had the spun hub version of the 238 Jaguar Type D Racing Car so I jumped in with mine to beat you! (LOL!!) :)

275 Brinks Armoured Car. Boxed with light grey plastic hubs and with black plastic hubs. The unboxed version is the rare Mexican Louis R Picaso Manriques promotional with dark grey plastic hubs. Apart from the hubs, there are other differences like the colour of the doors and the bumper and base plate. It is a chunky and rather heavy model, not easy to find in the box shown. The Mexican promotional was housed in a plain white carton box.
I was very lucky fo find the unboxed Mexican model, which is in near mint condition. It was on eBay, the seller had no idea what he was selling and advertised it as a standard model. I paid GBP 60,-........... :S

Later versions of the 275 have metal wheels, no driver and guard and no cases of bullion. They were housed in window boxes and easy to find.
Brinks also had a promotional model made, which had a white lift-off box with Brinks markings on it. The model is a standard late model with metal hubs, but the box is rare.

Kind regards,
Rob
