-551, 951 and 428 Large Trailer (1948-71)

An older picture of an Ebay auction showed up again in my documentation. I remember having it stored because of the seemingly odd, never recorded brick red colour.

At first is seemed to me to be a no. 551 Large Trailer indeed, an early version with ridged Dinky Toys hubs and grey round tread Dinky Supertoys tyres.

But then, looking more closely, and comparing with my own trailers, I realized that it’s just its French brother, the no. 70 Remorque Bâchée, the covered trailer, but now as a look-alike, being rather unrecognizable without the hood. The fresh, shiny maroon red of the new model has suffered in all those years, producing a kind of brick red colour, as used for instance for the early no. 501 Foden Diesel 8- Wheel Wagon.

And of course this has nothing to do with the real, late red no. 428 red Large Trailer which was available almost 20 years later!

Kind regards, Jan Werner

An effort to date my Large Trailers:

I would be delighted to see if others could show pictures of: the yellow one with red or black hubs, the early light grey one with black hubs, a 951 example with the 551/951 trade box and the later issues with cream or blue hubs or red plastic hubs. Box variants also welcome, kind regards, Jan

Hi Jan,

I can help with pictures of three of your 'wants'.

That is great, Ron, thanks! Were almost getting complete here. Jan

P.S.: Remarkable that the late one with red plastic hubs comes with a much older box, as it seems. And that one appears to have no crimped drawing bar ends either!

Hello Jan and Co.,

I should have known better than to use the 'wrong' box with the plastic wheeled #428 trailer.   The original box was in much rougher condition - plain red and yellow with the end flaps missing.   Here is another photo of it without the box.  Also a Trade Pack different from yours in green without the multi-lingual description.   Finally, the large trailer was copied by Micro Models (Australia/New Zealand), but much cruder depiction of the sides, but it does have dual wheels at the back.

Lovely, Ron, both the green one and its box! And nice to have the Micro Model copy presented here, for comparison. Boxes are so easily swapped. It's a pity if they get mixed up. Good to know you have the correct box too, albeit in poor condition. Kind regards, Jan

And here is a yellow version, very well played-with but original.

I have just received a 428 large trailer with blue wheel hubs.   The camera sure shows up all the chips!

Thanks, Kevin and Ron, for these additions! Just the cream hubs version to be added ...

I found another image of the yellow one, auctioned in 2005 by Peter Davies of Dublo Auctions (then: Collect-a-toy on ebay). Apparently it is hard to find a better yellow example. Kind regards, Jan

Hi all, I have just acquired another 428 Large Trailer with plastic hubs - this one has a correct box I think?

Wow, that's a nice one, Ron! Condition and contemporary match taken into account they must certainly belong to each other. Kind regards, Jan

Hi, is anybody familiar with this Large Trailer in regular medium grey, but with maroon instead of the regular red hubs? It is a no. 551 (cast in below the bogie) but it comes with an individual yellow illustrated end flaps box, which - in my opinion - does not belong to it. I did not know of its existence, but searching the intermet I found another one (the only other one), shown by Little Wheels Museum. That one with black round treaded tyres instead of mine with block tread. Based on that transition I tend to date this version at about 1952-1953, which would be about the date for this maroon hubbed example, with my example the later one on 1953. Any comments? Kind regards, Jan

Jan. Take a look at this one on Ebay. I think this is one with maroon hubs. This is the link: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Modellauto-Dinky-Toys-Trailer-Nr-428-Ford-von...

Personaly I am for a long time looking for a yellow one to combine with my Bedford articulated Lorry, but what I found till now are all heavy chipped overall.

Kind regards, Jan O

Yes, the yellow one ...

I'm looking for an excellent and affordable example for almost 20 years already, but indeed, most of them are heavily chipped - and so obviously on these bright models. I have eleven large trailers now, except for two identical models from a trade box, all different. Still looking for four variants: the yellow one, grey with black, red plastic, cream and blue hubs ...  I am not particularly a variants collector, but the Large Trailers are generally so very cheap to find, very common.

Thanks Jan, kind regards, Jan W

A second look at the one you found on eBay, Jan, made me realize that this is another (sub)variant. It is even slightly earlier than the couple I have shown, as it has black rear mudguards as an extra! Kind regards, Jan W

Jan. Indeed the earliest versions usually have black mudguards. At least I know that about the Bedford Articulated Lorry. It is not entirely visible on the photos of Ebay, but it seems me that the support between the rear mudguard and the body of the Ebay one is also narrower than your example.

Kind regards, Jan O.

I have just acquired a nice, boxed example of the late 428 red trailer. There is no reference to either Dinky Toys or Dinky Supertoys anywhere on the model. The only markings are "Made in England" and "Meccano Ltd." on the forward end of the turntable. The opposite side, where the "DT" or "DST" wording is normally found is totally clear, no trace of any lettering whatsoever. Are all examples of late 428 trailers the same?

Hello Kevin, this changed in 1958, with the arrival of the no. 985 Trailer for Car Carrier, which had to share the bogie with the Large Trailer. To this purpose the bogie text was 'generalized', and individual differences deleted. The Car Carrier Trailer had the wording 'Dinky Supertoys' already cast in below and the Large Trailer lacked it's Dinky Toys brand name since then. Moreover, the bogie got two small reinforcement triangles added inside. Kind regards, Jan

Thanks for that explanation, Jan. All of my 551/951 trailers are marked with Dinky Toys or Supertoys, so now I must look for a grey one without the branding !

The trade boxes previous (natural cardboard) and subsequent (blue) to the nice green one as shown in post #5 above. Please note that the grey of the later models looks much brighter than the previous duller grey of the later forties and early fiftees. Other differences also obvious. Kind regards, Jan

I noticed in Ron F's post (#5) that the wire towing bar in the green trailer has its ends pointing inwards, whereas all the other trailers in the thread have the ends pointing outwards. Was this a deliberate change in the method of assembly and when did it occur?

On checking again I saw that Jan W's green trailer has the same arrangement. Something about the colour green??

The change from inwards pointing ends to outward pointing ends runs (approximately) parallel to the change from Dinky Toys hubs to Dinky Supertoys hubs, so that change took place ca. 1952. Obviously mounting the towing bar was much easier when the ends to be crimped pointed outward. Kind regards, Jan W

I finally found an example with plastic hubs. It took me some years so i'm very happy with this version. Still looking for the version with blue supertoys hubs. Can any member tell me if another version is missing from my above group of trailers?

The answer, Jacques, to your request: this example with yellow hubs has the grooved Dinky Supertoys diecast hubs. I presume the only plastic hubs on the Large Trailer are in red. Correct or not? Kind regards, Jan
