Jan,
This is the only photo that I have found of this car transporter. The photo has been in the Dinky Toys Encyclopaedia since the begining 15 years ago.
The picture has been taken after a Simca Aronde had driven for 100 000 km. without stoping and at the average speed of over 100 km/h.
Refueling, change of driver etc. was done by mean of a U shaped trailer into which the record car could be driven.
This is the meaning of the sign "100 000 à 100" on the car transporter.
Hello Jan,
The difference between what and what ?
Hello Jacques, I meant if there is a difference between Lautaret ZU 101 and ZU 120 T Izoard, which one then is the Dinky Unic tractor actually based on, which one is the correct prototype? Or are these differences of no importance to the looks of the Dinky tractor? Kind regards, Jan
Hi Jan,
As stated in the January 1958 French Meccano Magazine (see below), the Dinky is based on the Lautaret.
There were nine different names of mountain passes : Lautaret, Galibier, Izoar, Somport, Puymorens, Tourmalet, Bussang, Donon and Saverne. All have the same cab but different power. The highest the pass is the more power the truck has. Anyway all this is not important as for once Meccano has given us the answer. The Lautaret is the most powerfull.
Perfectly clear! Kind regards, Jan
While looking for a variation of the trailer, I found an other one.
In 2014 Richard posted a picture of his three trailers and nobody spoted the variation. I blew up the picture and it is obvious that the model on the left is an early issue. This still does not explain why a letter Y and a dot have been added.
We know these two models but as two changes never happen at the same time, there MUST be a rare intermediate version with either the Y and the boss
or without the Y and without the boss.
An other question : which colour are the two packing pieces ? yellow or grey ?

Dear Jan,
Thank you for your help. I asked this question because I have seen a photo with grey packing pieces. The model belongs to Patrick M who is very fussy and would not tolerate copies, counterfeits and the like. I still wander if these grey pieces are original or not.
Kind Regards
Jacques. At the moment an 894 is being auctioned on Ebay NL with a grey packing piece with the link: https://www.ebay.fr/itm/Dinky-Toys-REF-894-Tracteur-Unic-et-Semi-Remorque-Porte-Voitures-BOILOT/324087425961?hash=item4b751daba9:g:U2QAAOSwxe5eWW99 It even has an original French quality control stamp.
QDT has also sold some 894 with grey inner packaging: https://www.qualitydiecasttoys.com/products/28692-FRENCH-DINKY-894
Kind regards, Jan O
Thank you every one for your help. What emerges from this is that the grey packing pieces are the late ones.
The inside and packing pieces of the 39a box are yellow and the ref. number 39a is printed on a black oval on top of the lid.
The inside and packing pieces of the 894 box are grey. The ref. number 894 is not printed on top of the lid.
Jan
There is no end to the variations. There are always transitionnal versions.
Could you please make me the same picture as the one above (post # 40) with the yellow packing pieces ?
Kind regards.
