In the thread on the 108 MG Midget Sports (Competition Version) Bruce Hoy related his experience of receiving this model, along with the 111 Triumph TR2 Sports, for Christmas circa 1956. As he recalled, the models came without their racing numbers applied, but with transfers that were to be applied by the purchaser.
This in itself was a rare occurence, but what has now come to light is that Meccano Ltd. briefly packaged the racing numbers as a separate accessory. Offered in a recent Vectis auction -- though bundled with some detritus that unfortunately deterred me from purchasing the lot for £70 -- was this "factory sealed" bag of racing numbers. I am attaching pictures, one reversed to make clear that yes, this was labelled as a separate item by the factory.
Unfortunately, if there was a number associated with it, I cannot make it out. Was this sold seprately, or was it supplied only with the models?
Thanks — that clearly is the packet I found on the Vectis site!
Some knowledgeable gentleman explained somewhere before that this model was delivered without racing numbers because it is finished in the primer which was used by Jaguar to deliver it's D types to private racing teams. A racing number could not be given to such a car but Meccano never explained this.
There is a reference number 50100 printed on the packet (green arrow) but this had already been used for the RAC motorcycle patrol. There is no other known reference probably because this was not made by Meccano, it was a full printer's item.
