Trade Boxes

Seeing the wonderful photo of Bruces Bedford CA trade box inspired me to open a new thread.

I have an extensive collection of trade boxes which I have acquired over the years and I have a nice example to kick this off:

Six 673 Daimler Scout Cars which I bought as a full box about five years ago, this is quite a difficult box to find and should contain the earliest scout cars which do not contain a driver.

Dave
Very nice boxful. I know from past postings that you have quite a collection of trade boxes, so it will be nice to see them here.

While waiting for Dave to provide us with more trade boxes from his collection, here is my trade box with three examples of 25w Bedford Truck. You will see that two of the three have the uncommon black front mudguards. The box and one black mudguard model was won at an auction conducted by Wallis and Wallis on 18 November 1996 with six other Dinky Toys. (The model is the example at the front, of the photo of the box and contents.) The auction did not have a photograph so I purchased it "sight unseen". You can imagine my absolute delight on unwrapping the contents of Lot 337 and to discover the 25w had black front mudguards, and no doubt belonged to the trade box in the same lot.

A box of 30hm Daimler Military Ambulances.

These were export items primarily for the USA, in reality the British Army never used the Daimler ambulance as it was not four-wheel drive and totally unsuitable for cross-country use.

Probably one of the rarest tradebox, this one is printed in German. Some were also printed in Spanish.

Never seen that 23a Racing Car trade box, did it contain the English 23a or the French version?

Here is a 161b Mobile Anti-Aircraft trade box.

An almost full box of sack trucks without the dividers. Box dated January 1949, priced at 9d (nine pence) each. The box only came with a single Sack Truck, so were there any casting differences?

I presume the cardboard dividers were not necessary (so not present) if the models were packed in protecting tissue paper, which was used to save space if the models would nicely fit into each other, like this one or the 23a/220 Racing Car, etc. Do you agree, Bruce, or others? Kind regards, Jan

Further info on the above; the sack truck trade box never had dividers, they were wrapped in tissue paper.

I have had a couple of queries on the 673 Scout Car trade box and here is some more info:

The time line for the Dinky Toys Scout Car is as follows:

New in November 1953, no seat holes, no driver, sold out of a trade box of six. Like mine.

Mid 1954 sold in individual yellow box, no seat holes, no driver.

Late 1954 sold in individual yellow box now with driver. Box marked "With Driver"

1961 discontinued.

As can be seen all these changes happened within one year. There was never a trade box containing models with drivers.

Three of the rarest Dinky Toy trade boxes are the 673 Scout car, the 480 Bedford van 'Kodak' and the 157 Jaguar XK120 as these were only issued for a few months. the one shown abve by Jacques is incredibly rare as it is very old.

Thanks for that Dave. I thought they might have been treated the same as the small aeroplanes, Tempest, Shooting Star, etc. Any casting differences?

I don't know of any casting differences but there are two colours, the vast majority being blue and a much rarer green version.

I have a large chart of all the models of tradeboxes. It is much too large for this forum and ImageShack has gone nuts and can not give me a link. If you are interested, drop me a mail and I will send it to you.

This is a small part of it.

Two trade boxes for the 38f Jaguar. An early plain box and the last yellow export box with the renumbering to 105. This is the only 38 series trade box I have seen with printed dual numbering. I have two other 38 series trade boxes with a stamped dual number. The 105/38f trade box also has a red colour dot on both ends. The box inside only shows red paint markings. Found in the US. Rob

The early (1948-49) version of the no. 551 Large Trailer trade box. The only Dinky Supertoys ever delivered in trade boxes, I presume. Kind regards, Jan.

I am lost for words, the cars are all perfect as well as the box.

This is a future project for me, I do not own a single 39 series car. That will be rectified.

Thank you Dave, I think you are right in trying to find nice 39 series
cars. Not too difficult to find, e.g. on eBay.

The OXO van and trade box are very nice. A better OXO van than the one I already have and a trade box are on my shopping list. The list never seems to get any smaller!!!

Here are four Land Rovers in a trade box, the dividers are replacements.

Staying with an agricultural theme, here is the 27j Triple Gang Mower:

I believe that the divider is original, it looks like the blue card used for the bases of Dinky Supertoys.

David,

I do not think that the divider in your box is original. The original had a cross member as shown on the picture above. Of course I may be wrong.
