Genuine Point of sale stand?

Hi all,

From a question posted in another forum, has anybody seen this POS stand before? Is it original? It's a new one on me, it's in New Zealand at a VERY steep price.

Chris, I think you will find it's in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia.

The font looks right, but not something I have seen before.

Chris and Dave

Is this item on an auction somewhere? Do either of you have more details?

Hi Bruce

Apparently it's in a second hand store in Hobart with a AU$500 price tag. The original post on another forum is seeking details on authenticity!

Not much more I know, except the volume on this item would equate to a huge shipping cost even if just over the Tasman Sea to me here in New Zealand. Although to you in Queensland it could be quite possible. I will pm you and seek further details from the original poster if you wish?

Cheers Dave

Thanks Dave - my interest is in curiosity, as like many who read this Forum, such an unusual POS display stand has not been seen previously. Perhaps it was made locally to a special order, but if you do learn anything more, I am sure the membership would appreciate anything you can post. Possibly my friend Ron F. over there may know something.
No wonder I could not find anything on eBay or TradeMe!
Thanks again.
Bruce

I am guessing here but my feeling is that this is a locally produced item.

This display is genuin, the arrow on the card header dates it to C. 1970, the models may also give a clue about a more accurate date. Of course finding the sales aids would help a lot to list all these displays and to date them. One has found it's way to Japan but I can not remember where I have seen this.

This is not from 1970. The arrow emblem was used by Liverpool only for a brief period (approximately 1962-1963, though I have forgotten the exact period and will have to look through Meccano Magazines again to determine it). The emblem did make its way onto many displays, since Meccano were experimenting with different styles at this time.

This display probably did not actually make its way to Japan, but a black-and-white version of the photo above was employed in Japanese advertising. The photo was then hand-colored by a Japanese artist, showing colors for the models that never really existed.

(Jacques, I very recently sent an email to various members listing every display used by Liverpool that I could find pictures of, along with some supporting information. I have tried to send it to you many times but it always bounces back.)

I checked through Meccano Magazines to see when the arrow first appeared in Dinky advertising and when it was dropped. Its first appearance was in the MM of March 1963 and its last appearance was in the MM of June 1965.

As a matter of interest, the arrow symbol was derived from a relatively new British road sign from the period - "Clearway", denoting a major road where stopping or parking was not allowed.
