-908 Thornycroft Mighty Antar and Transformer (1962-66)

TRANSFERED FROM "NEW ARRIVALS".

My latest arrival has taken a couple of years to find and acquire, so I was very happy to finally find it and end that quest. It is the #908 Dinky Supertoys Mighty Antar with Transformer load. To me at least, these are seldom seen on eBay anymore, and more often then not, either not in very good condition, or missing the box and contents. They have also become quite pricey when in mint or near mint condition. Several years ago, I happened to acquire it's French cousin, the Berliet based transporter with the same transformer, so I really wanted to have both. I also have the Mighty Antar with the propeller load, as well as the tank transporter, so getting this one completed all of those mini-collections.

This one is not mint, but very, very nice, with bright shiny paint, and a very good box, with the inner packing piece along with the transformer instruction sheet. All in all, I am very happy! Later I will post some photos along with its Mighty Antar brothers and the Berliet cousin.

Congratulations Terry, a nice Christmas present for yourself! A collecting milestone, so to say, completing a sub-collection.

Fortunately the radiator unit does not have the same unrealistic, huge silver paint cover as the one shown on the box ...

Thanks Jan....for sure it was an early Christmas present, and I told my wife as much! Also, like your collection interests, this is a bit outside of my main Dinky Toys era ending around 1959-1960, but since it evolved from an earlier model, I still felt it belonged and deserved a place in my collection. Plus, since I was a youngster, I was impressed with the large Supertoys, such as these Mighty Antar's represent, as well as the various car transporters.

By the way, wishing you and all the others a very Merry Christmas! We will be traveling to India to visit our son and his family right after Christmas, so I will be off the forum for a couple of weeks...from December 26 through January 12.

Rare issue of the #908 Mighty Antar with transformer with yellow Supertoys hubs.

Is there any evidence for a variation with yellow PLASTIC hubs ?

There are even boxes showing the yellow hubs.

Now which one came first ? Yellow or red hubs ?

Jacques - I would say without hesitation that the red hubs superseded the yellow hubs based on the photograph that appears in the October 1962 issue of the Meccano Magazine in which the announcement was made of the model's release, which I have reproduced below. This clearly shows the model with dark hubs that can only be red.

A NICKY TOYS version of the civilian Mighty Antar Tank Transporter, without transformer but complete with box, was recently sold on eBay for £365. According to the seller he bought it in a toy shop in Delhi in 1982. Here are a few photos from the eBay page but more can be seen by searching for item 151903274687.

I am sorry but this is the wrong thread for the Nicky Toys tank transporter. I do not know if it is usual to paint the trucks in bright yellow in the Indian Army but the box of the Nicky is clearly printed with 660.

This model was fitted with Supertoys hubs. Does this mean that the die (s), for the hubs were sold to ATAMCO in 1963 and that from that date no more Supertoys hubs were made in England ?

Does the same apply to the driver ref. 608 ? By the way, I do not have a photo of the postwar chap outside from any vehicle. Can some one help ?
