-264 RCMP Patrol Car - Ford Fairlane (1962-65) and RCMP Patrol Car - Cadillac (1965-68)

A new thread to the 1st performance of the RCMP Patrol Car Ford Fairlane, issued 1962-1966.

It has an RCMP logo on the white side of the front doors, a flasher beacon on the roof, a radio aerial on the left rear and 2 police men in uniform (Mounties) in front of the car. The cast of the car is equal to 148 Ford Fairlane. It was delivered in the colour dark blue and light blue. I love this police car very much because the 2 mounties in the front of the car, and ... it was my job.

Dinky Toys 264 R.C.M.P. Patrol Car Ford Fairlane.

Logo RCMP on front doors of the Patrol Car.

Logo Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Meccano Magazine UK March 1962.

The uniform of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

The real “Patrol Car” of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Ford Fordor as RCMP Patrol Car.

The more modern Ford Crown Victoria as RCMP Patrol Car.

I could not find a picture of a real RCMP Ford Fairlane Patrol Car of those days.

Thereafter came the 2nd performance of the RCMP Patrol Car Cadillac from 1966-1968. The cast of that car was equal to 147 Cadillac 62 with the same features as the 264 Ford Fairlane.

Jan,
Interesting post! I read 'King of the Royal Mounted' as a child and was very happy when the Ford turned up as an R.C.M.P car although King never had a car, he rode his horse.
I also found this 1961 Ford Meteor.

A delightful post on one of my favourite Dinky Toys ever! Either this or the USA Police equivalent would have to be in my top ten.

Purchasing this model new as a child, however, I was frustrated about Meccano Ltd.'s choice of a two-door sedan to model, however, since every police car I had seen had four doors. To this day, I don't understand why they modelled a two-door Fairlane when they could just as easily have modelled a four-door one.

Of course, this model's eventual Cadillac replacement was even worse. I can't say for sure that a Cadillac hardtop was never used by any police force, but considering the cost of these vehicles, it seems extremely unlikely.

As for the RCMP, I located some pictures of earlier and later Fords that indeed were two-doors. Apparently these cars were used for "traffic enforcement," in which it was unlikely that a "perp" would have to be fitted into the back seat.

A very pleasing model in my collection too. I have a question - was the RCMP Ford version ever fitted with the smaller diameter wheels in the same way that it's USA cousin (black and white 258) and the awful Cadillac was?

I am relatively insensitive to variants (and a good thing too, since I can't afford to collect them all), but I can say that my RCMP Ford, RCMP Cadillac, USA Ford, and USA Cadillac all have the same size wheels -- "smaller diameter," presumably.

Despite its inaccuracy, the Cadillacs wouldn't have been that bad if they hadn't changed the doors from paint/decals to stickers -- a very unpleasant economy. That makes me wonder if there were any Cadillacs that had the paint/decals, or if they made the change at the time they switched to the new casting?

Thanks all for your very welcome comments.

I found these pictures of a DT 264 RCMP Patrol Car Cadillac. It looks like these still have a paint RCMP logo instead of a decal.

Jan

I found your Post to be very interesting as I was unaware that the white door was firstly painted with the insignia as a transfer which then evolved to a combined sticker for both the white door and insignia.

However, the PDF file has the two versions Fairlane and Cadillac as separate Topics, although Meccano never did with identifying the manufacturer"s model name for some reason. The other option and the best one in my opinion is to ignore the PDF file and change the title of this Topic to the following that combines both versions into the one topic that would save readers switching from one Topic to another while dealing with virtually the same subject:

-264 RCMP Patrol Car - Ford Fairlane (1962-65) and RCMP Patrol Car - Cadillac (1965-68)

Notice I have changed "Police" as on the PDF File to "Patrol", the wording Meccano used.

Kind regards

Bruce-I'm happy with your comment and I totally agree with you. I've followed your recommendation and modified the title of this topic. I did not know the exact rules for creating the title of a topic. I also just received an email from Jan Werner with the explanation about this. I am very pleased with it because it is important that everyone does it at the same way. I'll just repeat here how Jan Werner explained this to me in his email.(Note: I translated it from Dutch to English)

"To be able to sort properly, four positions for numbers must be used.

Thus: 301 becomes -301, 27d becomes -27d, 5 becomes --- 5, 161b becomes -161b.

Thus, the number of leading lines differs as the four digit positions are to be filled. The letter suffixes do not matter. Those alphabetizing themselves, those positions do not count. So -33a and -33an sort themselves well.

When you want to start a new topic, you may want to look in the recommended list for a while (you can just copy it if you wish). You can find that list under Publications> PDF Library.

The names of the models must be taken over in accordance with the name as used by the factory, in catalogues and the like."

Kind regards,

Good morning Jan (It is good evening down here!)

Delighted that you have changed the title of this Topic!  This certainly saves Johnny, Jan W moving their Posts to the CadillacTopic!

Plus it keeps all the useful information members will Post on either car in the one area. I was going to advise that two Topics should be opened until I put brain into gear and came up with that suggestion!!

Actually, guidance on creating Topics can be found by opening the Forum, and then

DTCA Forum

Forum Rules and Information

Then Select the following Topic

Forum - How To's

Then it is Post #2

There is also guidance on up-loading images within the text, and a whole heap of other useful information.

This website was a great learning curve for all of us as we had been previously used to the old website, but now that things have fallen into place, it is a very good site, although it is a little cumbersome in downloading images within the text, which is why most prefer adding images at the end of their Post. I encountered a slight problem with my recent 174 Hudson Hornet Topic, when something happened when I was almost finished, and I lost everything!  Fortunately, I always prepare the text in Word which I copy and paste, and include the images and image number within the text, so it was relatively easy to start over again, but that meant bed was delayed by another hour! It would be nice if the preparation can be saved without the Post appearing online, and when finished completely, up-load the lot. Not sure if this actually happens with the Preview.

It is really great that we have another member in you adding fascinating "stuff" and keeping the website alive and interesting!

Kind regards

Jan -- On the Cadillac (and also the later RCMP Parisienne) the white portion of the door as well as the RCMP logo are both provided by a sticker. I wish they had not devised this way of cheapening the product, but there you have it!

Johnny-Thank you for your addition.

I have too little background knowledge of Dinky Toys about these kinds of questions. So I'm very happy with your explanation. It's now very clear to me.

Sticking with Ford Fairlanes although not with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, here are some more images, although taken South of the Border!  The black and white image is from "The Twilight Zone".

The colour image unfortunately is of a 4-door sedan. Not quite certain how the Mounties put their man in the back seat if the need arose while on highway duties without a sealed barrier between the front and back seats!

Cheers

Bruce-Many thanks for your nice pictures. Hard to find pictures of the Ford Fairlane Patrol Car.

Indeed, a 2 door car is very inconvenient to put a person on the back seat....But,...on the other hand, there's one advantage...it's impossible with a 2-door car to escape from the back seat, because you want to hold your manwenk.

To speak with the famous Dutch football player Johan Cruijff: "Every disadvantage has its advantage".

In one of your posts above, you refer to a new casting for the RCMP Cadillac.

I am not aware of a variation on this model, can you please explain ?

Jacques, sorry for the confusion. When i referenced 'new casting" earlier, i was referring to the police car being changed from the Fairlane to the Cadillac. i am unaware of any variations on the Cadillac itself!

Today I received the 264 RCMP Cadillac Patrol Car with box.

I've always been looking for this model but could not find a good example. Now I have both models of the 264 RCMP Ford Fairlane and Cadillac Patrol Car complete with box. Fortunately complete with antenna and decals that are often missing.

It is a pity that Meccano Liverpool did not make a separate box for this beautiful Cadillac RCMP Patrol Car.

Kind regards,
