--28 Series Vans (1)

I think we need a thread dedicated to my absolute favourite Dinky Toy, in fact I have seriously considered giving up all my other Dinky collecting,to buy only half a dozen Pre War 28's a year, to see just how many of these I can get before a) they all explode, or b) I run out of money.
Anyway here's my latest, and I'm really pleased with it, 28r Type 3 "Swan Pens"......

At least this one stand up on it's own, which is more than can be said for my Type 3 "Fry's" van which relies on the power of folded kitchen roll for support...

Here are my other Type 2'S....

Gents, I would LOVE to see your Pre War 28's as even pictures of these make me come over all emotional.

Thanks Jan, I reckon that has got to be about the most expensive post on here :laugh:
I actually considered bidding on the Maison van when it was sold a couple of months ago, think the seller took a loss on it as it wasn't THAT expensive, still a few grand though. The only way I could have justified it was to not buy any more Dinky's for a year, and put all my Corgis and Budgies into the Toyfair stock. In the end I didn't do it, but was a bit gutted when it sold well below what I thought it would get.
Do you remember in 1994 / 95 when John Hemley's Bentall's van was sold for 12,650GBP? I still have the auction poster framed on my wall with the Daily Mail clipping. At the time it was thought to be the only one left, I think there are four or five now?
I still dream that one day a Liverpool Echo van with the roof sign will show up, preferably in a box of old tat I buy for a fiver at a bootsale.

Hi Chris, I think it's better to spend your money on a nice modest collection than buying such lonely treasures for the rich.
Here is the Christie's Hemley's auction catalogue's cover of 14 October 1994. Indeed, in the auction of 22 June 1995 the second Bentalls Van showed up already!

I do not have any of the pre-war 28's, but agree that they comprise some of the most desirable Dinky's ever made. They sheer variety of castings plus liveries is almost mind boggling....it would take a super human effort and tons of money to assemble a large collection of these. And is it me, or do almost all of them seem to suffer from pretty severe fatigue...just seems most pictures tend to show that.

Hi Terry, the Type 1's don't suffer fatigue as they are lead, having said that they are so rare I've never even held one. The type 2's and Type 3's suffer very badly, more than most Pre War's even I think, then again I suppose if they've lasted 70 years they aren't doing too bad!My Firestone van show's no fatigue at all, it's just play battered, the amazing thing is how much bigger the Pre War Type 3 is than the Post war...

Presuming these all came from the same die set it's no wonder they get thin and drop apart as the metal grows.

Chris--That is a great photo showing the dramatic effect of fatigue, and how it can add considerably to the overall size as it expands. It is both interesting and terrible to witness the slow destruction of these wonderful models. And I do wonder why that particular pre-war model seems to suffer more from this. It seems that most of the photos I have seen of pre-war 28's almost always shows some fatigue, while many other pre-war models show many examples that show no fatigue what so ever.

Hi Terry,
You're right, another example is chassis' on the 24, 36 and 25 Series, I have seen models where the body is in good condition, or shows only minor fatigue, and the chassis is falling apart or gone altogether. Others like the 39 Series I often see with little or no fatigue at all.The only explanation I can think of is if huge lots of some bodies / chassis' were cast up, then stored waiting for painting in the required colours, that way a chassis or 28 series van body, could be cast, then could wait months even to be painted and issued. I have no idea if that's what happened, it just answers the question. We know that Meccano became aware of the problem in the 30's so surely they would have stopped lead getting in the mazak ASAP, whereas it does appear over several years production??

Vince, welcome for the first time in this forum. I hope you will enjoy it in the future.

You come right away with a very special question. I do not have this model, but i will try to find an answer to this question, so I'm looking for it at the Vectis auction website.

I found an auction of this model and for convenience, I give the text of this auction all the way back. The text speaks for itself:

"Dinky Pre-War No.280G Promotional Delivery Van

Monday 10th March 2008 12:00am

Lot 36

Dinky Pre-war No.280G Promotional Delivery Van "Bentalls" Type 2 - green body, yellow upper side panels, white roof, "Bentalls Kingston On Thames - Phone KIN1001", black smooth hubs, white tyres. Little fatigue but some surface cracking to paint on roof and parts of bonnet. This is one of the very rare special promotional models made by Dinky Toys in the late 1930s. Very few exist and at present only 6 Bentall Vans are known. Overall condition is Good Plus. VERY RARE.

Estimate: £5000 - £7000 Sold for: £7500 "

 

If you own this model you are a very lucky guy because it is a very valuable and rare copy. I think you will never find out how much examples there really are, but I think that is not the most important thing to know.

Thank you ,,,,,yes I do own the bentalls van ,, and a few 28 s/1 s/2 delivery vans and a few prewar which I'm looking to sell.

Only 200 Bentals vans have been made.

One was sold by Collectoys for 16 800 € (£ 13 295).

You have a choice between eBay, Vectis, SAS, etc... but if you can, wait until mid september, now many possible buyers are on holiday.
