Several chrome plated Dinky Toys are known :
39e Chrysler Royale,
135 Triumph 2000
925 Leyland dump truck with tilt cab.
etc...
What were they exactly ?
Code 3 ?
Promotionnals ?
else ?
Guy Mayers from Liverpool may give us part of the answer ?
Here is a picture of the chrome "Leyland Dump Truck with Tilt Cab". The model number is 925 but I suspect that's the usual number for this particular base model.
We've got to be going back to the early 70's when my Dad was company accountant / company secretary at Binns road. I have no particular wish / need to sale this model but thought it might be of interest to your readers ! I have no idea what it's worth or how to value it. Mum took it to an Antiques Roadshow once and was told it was probably about £ 30. My memory isn't what it used to be and Dad is no longer around but my recollection of it was that the factory was commissioned to make a small run for dealerships selling the full size truck. If that's the case, I can't think that many survived ! Should your research reveal anything please let me know, and feel free to ask the readers.
Do you know other chrome plated Dinky Toys ?
Hi all,
Yes I do know of several chrome plated Dinky, and indeed Lesney toys and exactly where they came from.
In the early 70's my Dad worked at Delta Waterfittings in Birmingham, and when my old toys became tired he would take them to work, drill out the rivets, sandblast them, and pass them through the chrome process, they would then be screwed or in some cases re-rivitted back together, I got a nice new present that hadn't cost Dad a penny.
Only problem was that when I sold my collection in 1982 to a dealer from the London area the chromes went with them. I have no idea what became of the Dinky's, but I have seen a few chrome plated Lesneys go for silly money through the auctions that I'm pretty sure were Dad's handiwork!
The chrome Dinky's I recall were earlier than the Leyland though, typically Guys, Comets, and English and US cars of the 50's.
Buyer beware!

Chris,
Thank you for the story.
From time to time, we get first hand information like this that have not yet been published any where but unfortunately not enough.

Amongst your pictures at https://postimg.cc/gallery/qxepb53a/ I found this very good picture.
I have never seen this finish before, is it original ?
Jacques.
Hi Jacques,
No not original, someone has tried to match the box top colour scheme. Not a bad job....I purchased it for the box.
Cheers
Dave
