Website - Things to Fix

This topic is for members to bring system faults to the attention of the managers to fix something. Once the fix is completed the post would be deleted. Again this is to keep the size down to a manageable level.

Lately I see in the top left corner New posts & Pages continually old topics appear, where to see the date nothing is added or changed. What is the cause of this? I hope this is the right place to report this.

Kind Regards, Jan Oldenhuis

Hi Jan, for most of these topics coming along there the correct prefix notation has now been applied (with correct dashes and numbers) in order to have them sorted in a balanced way in the list of topics within the forums. This in order to have a better overview of the topics dealt with and to avoid double (or more) creating of threads dealing with the same topic. Kind regards, Jan W

I was wondering the same thing.....I kept expecting to see something new, but noticed the post dates were all older.
Best regards,
Terry

Dear all, as it seemed that the ever growing Forum grew out of control more and more, without any adjusting actions when things went obviously wrong as new posts is concerned, I have asked Dave Kaun, cc Al Keeling, to have permission to make some necessary modifications about one week ago. Dave immediately gave that permission. As ‘Forum Manager’ now, I started with some incidental adjustments on current Forum communication, but it became obvious that I had to inspect and – if necessary – tackle all threads/topics/nodes created in the past years in order to re-create transparency and coherence. After one week this work is not finished yet in all details, but I hope you can see already that the content of the forums looks more neatly arranged now, and therefore easier to find. In order to accomplish this I had to correct the use of dashes, and reformulate and unify the names of many topics introduced in many years. Still, there remain multiple threads with the same name. It is the intention to reduce those multiple threads of the same name in the future, with a special tool, but you may understand that such will not be possible or even desirable for all. And, after all, they are now presented together and not scattered ‘here, there and everywhere’. If you intend to add posts to existing multiple topics there, please try to join with the most frequently used.

It appeared that information (essays, pictures, comments, questions about one topic) was not just scattered within the various forums, but also all over the various forums. I was surprised to find really valuable information hidden somewhere in an incorrect forum or posted under a very ‘misleading’ name. That information is transferred to the correct forums/folders and/or put under a more precisely named header. As much as possible all information has now been assigned to the model it’s all about. Other less model-defined topics will be found at the end of the model listing within the respective folders.

For some French models with harder to understand model names I have added equivalent names in English. Model topic names have been derived from the main model topics list, but minor adjustments may have taken place. Please, go on using this list as the main reference when you intend to introduce a new model-related topic. If they need little adjustment, I will have to do so and please, do not hesitate to advise me. The link to this list:

http://dtcawebsite.com/sites/default/files/library-uploads/DTCA-Forum-Topics.pdf

will only give access as soon as you have logged in as a registered member. It is to be found under Publications>PDF Library on the black bar on top of the page. And try to post in the best suitable forum/folder/thread available.

This is a quick and provisional answer to your questions. The (old) topics you see coming along are the result of my actions (of which I informed some of you privately already). I hope my solitary initiative will not make you grumble, I thought it was necessary for a good functioning of the Forum – in fact this message is posted in an incorrect place too, because this matter is about the Forum and not the website.

Please, dear Dinky friends, have a critical look at how things are now, and let me know if you have any more ideas and propositions. I will go on trying to make things better! Kind regards, Jan

Hello Jan.

Jan, many thanks for all your efforts to improve the website. We all benefit from that. Can you send a message when you have finished the reconstruction of the topics in New Posts & Pages. I have a new topic ready to publish, but if it is pushed away by multiple topic reconstructions, the question is whether my topic is noticed and I better wait for this job to be finished.

Kind regards, Jan O

Sorry, Jan, for obstructing your posting efforts. wink

I believe that the main moves and adjustments are done now. So I intend to keep next adjustments 'incidental', not too much disturbing the 'New Posts and Pages' listing. Please, everyone, advise about other possible improvements.

By the way, I believe that 'real' new posts are best visible when not logged in. Please, continue your appreciated contributions. As a start, I intend to add one or two new topics to the new 'Restorations, coversions, Code 3' folder. Although this is not my main focus, I know that many enthusiasts are very active in this field. Kind regards, Jan W

Hi Dave

Has the download of pictures with a maximum size in the text changed? I thought it was always maximum size 2 mb. I think the maximum is now 1 mb and I need to adjust the size of many more photos to get it in the text. That is very annoying and time-consuming. Has this changed recently?

Hello Jan,

This answer was provided by our technical guru Al Keeling;

Members can upload images of 1mb into the image uploader of the text editor ( tiny IMCE)

http://dtcawebsite.com/admin/config/media/imce/profile/edit/3

The other image uploader, Lightbox2  -  that's the one underneath the text editor -  is not limited.  But really users should not be uploading images over 1mb because that is already far too big for monitor displays.  Images up to 2mb and above should be discouraged and where feasible either resized or deleted.
