Post war toyshop? Any pictures out there ?

I have searched and searched the internet, but no luck.Has anybody got a picture of a post war toyshop with Dinky 's galore for sale and on Display ? The nearest is the Dinky catalogue with the schoolboys pointing at the window. :)
My Dad now in his late Sixties still remembers his local stationers in a very small Yorkshire market town used to open his back room prior to Christmas and the owner gave it over filling it full of Dinky Toys for sale.
Just a little bit of nostalgia :)

I used to be the editor of the DTCA Journal and I asked the same question twice but the response was absolutely nothing.

I have never seen such images in the magazines such as Model Collector or Diecast Collector.

I do have a photograph of a pre-war display

It was not a toy shop at all but a delicatessen in Liverpool called Coopers, they must have done something with Meccano.

Thank you for the picture Dave.Very grand display and you can feel that era.Looks like it has come from the Binns Road model room - three Dolly Varden's too!
I bet it drew a crowd and maybe some of our other members can find some pictures too :)

Not exactly a toyshop but a wonderful, and evocative postwar image, this was the Dinky Toys stand at the 1953 British Industries Fair in London:

It was strictly a trade fair but it is a fabulous display of Dinky Toys, Meccano also had other exhibits featuring Hornby Railways and Meccano.

Hi Dave,
Lovely picture, I only just noticed that both Weetabix and Spratts Guy vans are present. Before getting oddites like the supertoy hubs Slumberland I always thought that the older model was deleted before the new one came along, so it's good to see them together.

On the main subject how I wish I had pictures of the Dinky shops of my youth! This is Stratford House Antiques in Broad Street Birmingham, it was demolished to make the loading bay for the NIA, an absolute crime.

In the early 70's my Dad bought his Dinky Toys from here, they always had a cabinet of models on the right hand side of the door, and they only sold mint / mint boxed. I remember him getting a 923 Heinz van for

Re : Post war toyshop? Any pictures out there ?

I found this one, on the site of our National Archives:

I will enlarge it a little bit, it would probably be too large for uploading it here, so I divided it into two overlapping cuts which you might wish to stitch.

The photo is taken on 22 November 1961, in the exciting weeks preceding our Sint-Nicolaas feast on 5 December. In the window one can read in mirrored text 'Perry van der Kar' (nowadays 'Perry Sports'). I presume it is the shop in the Amsterdam Kalverstraat. Kind regards, Jan

Nice photo Jan.......the looks on the boys faces are priceless! Some interesting larger scale models on the far left.

Yes, isn't it nice? The large models on the left are by Schuco. I had the lowest, darker two-seater cabriolet myself, and there is more Schuco in the picture. Expensive stuff that was! Regards, Jan

Thank you Jan.
Great picture, well done for finding this one.
Interesting to see the mix of UK and French Dinky Toys in Amsterdam.Decisions, decisions for those boys looking into the window.
Also that poor Berliet transformer box lid appears to be struggling under the weight of the Daimler Ambulance and Berliet Low Loader with it's transformer!!

Some Dinky Toys have squeezed into this nicely arranged toy shop window. (I nicked the picture off Facebook.)

Thank you, Mark, for sharing this unusual colour photo with us. Most of them are still in black and white in this period.

Since the renewed website can present larger pictures, I will re-post mine, but now full size and in one piece. Kind regards, Jan

Jan---What a wonderful photo! Looking closely, it is somewhat scary to see several of those Dinky's stacked atop their boxes, on high perches.....looks quite precarious, but then I realized they are behind the glass partition. But a really nice period photo.
Best regards, Terry

I found a picture of THE toy shop.

It shows the Meccano show room in Berkeley Square London and is printed on page 2 of the 1960 Trade catalogue.
