MODEL COLLECTOR MAGAZINE - ITS DEMISE

I have created this new Topic as the demise of the excellent publication, MODEL COLLECTOR magazine is newsworthy in its own right. It is a worry that the discussion has actually taken place within an existing Topic, “New Arrivals” and it is easy to understand why this is so. Unlike the original website that collapsed, the current website does not contain the heading under which these posts exist. It is in fact NEW ARRIVALS, but when one looks at each page the top clearly states:

Home > Forums > Other Topics > General Information and Posts

The heading does not include that the reader is actually on the NEW ARRIVALS page. I wondered why the following message stated about getting back onto the subject but after doing a little clicking, I discovered that these comments are correct.

The following is the discussion that has taken place, commencing with Jacques opening the topic:

I have learnt that My Time Media the publisher of the magazine Model Collector has stoped to publish this magazine. I have just had a long talk with the publisher who regrets that the compagny refuses to make any announcement about this matter.

This is probably a sign that our world of model cars is going slowly.

Yes I received my copy of Diecast Collector yesterday saying that they have taken over MC and merged/extended my subscriptions into one. As I’ve followed MC since buying the first issue on Victoria Station in the 1990s I am disappointed; DC may be more older Diecast orientated possibly, and both have moved on a bit to attract new younger collectors with newer interests, but I found them complementary. I understand Lindsey the editor was bound by confidentiality agreement until the letter yesterday, and is editing Model Boats now!

That's tragic news indeed! I hope and trust that my subsciption to MC will automatically be transferred to DC and that by this fusion one firm and viable diecast model magazine will survive and remain for a long time. I hope Lindsey and her colleagues will find a decent and suitable continuation of their jobs. Kind regards, Jan

I'm very sorry to hear the news about Model Collector. As far as I'm concerned it was always superior to DC, especially when it came to articles on Dinky Toys and other "obsolete" diecasts. Furthermore Lindsey had been one of the best editors I know in terms of creating a "sense of place" in the publication and in responding to reader letters -- I don't say that just because letters from me were published once or twice in the last few years.

Our hobby of model cars is no doubt dwindling -- most collectors in their peak earning years want to collect toys from their childhood, which now likely means a boom in old video games -- but I am sure the coronavirus impact on advertisers such as show organisers and auction houses was the major factor. I wish Lindsey luck in playing with boats!

I would like to add to the above by expressing my dismay that this prestigious magazine is no longer with us. It preceded DIECAST COLLECTOR by many years, and the articles especially those from members of this Association were excellent and was particularly helpful to our members especially those who are not connected to the Internet thus accessing this website.

As for the loss of the magazine, I had been in infrequent contact with the editor, Lindsey Amrani over a number of years, and she was considering publishing my story on the 965 Euclid Rear Dump Truck. My last email to her was to enquire what has happened to my subscription copies and I subsequently received a reply from Kate Hall, the Subscription Manager on how I can access the digital copies. Last night I tried that link after reading the above Posts which notified me that the magazine no longer exists, and the notice came up that the page I wished to access no longer exists. Interesting that Ms Hall never thought it appropriate to notify each subscriber of the demise of the magazine and what is happening with our subscriptions.

So, if any subscriber receives some form of official advice as to what is happening with their subscriptions, I hope they can post it here.

Kind regards to you all

Hi Bruce,  The New Arrivals topic, like other long threads, continues over many pages.  The page number navigation is at the bottom of every page.   The first page has the New Arrivals topic title at the top (the topic is in the forum subsection General Informations and Posts).  Now the title used to be repeated at the top of every page in the topic.  That was a feature I coded into the forum at the start but obviously it has been knocked off somewhen - probably during an admin update.  I'll have a look at getting it fixed again.  This is now fixed.

Re: MODEL COLLECTOR MAGAZINE - ITS DEMISE

Hello Al

I am very grateful that you have replied to me as I was starting to think I was imagining things concerning the titles, although as you know only too well, since the original website crashed, and your considerable efforts to help me rebuild my Posts, I took the unusual effort of copying every one of my Posts as soon as I had hit the "Save" button.  A sort of insurance, at least for my "literary" efforts should anything drastic happen again! I am glad that you have confirmed my memory (and my records) that the title of the Topic actually appeared on each "Page/Post".

I hope you can perform your magic again and bring back this feature that has somehow been "knocked off"! (See, I have already started by "including" the title!!

Finally, I have not been a very regular contributor for the past year or so, as I have undergone several procedures, one of which was life-threatening, the next possibly life-threatening if not treated and then another I am to undergo, that also is of a similar concern. It seems I have reached the age where things start falling off, crashing, or breaking down. (Hence a new Topic I wrote about disposing of my collection that appeared in the DTCA website on 30 January last year.)

Thank you for all you recent messages, and I hope you can save the day with the current problem!

Kind regards

Bruce

I know what you mean about bits falling off, crashing, etc. Hope your upcoming procedures go well.

I subscribed to Model Collector magazine and recently received a copy of Diecast Collector magazine instead, with a letter saying that my subscription had been switched to Diecast Collector.  I was very sad to learn of the passing of Model Collector, having enjoyed it since 1987.

Re: MODEL COLLECTOR MAGAZINE - ITS DEMISE

Greetings Fred

Thank you for your reply.  At least you have received DIECAST COLLECTOR!!  I have not as yet heard a thing, although I received a message from my local Post Office where I have my post office box, that there is mail awaiting for collection. I hope it is DIECAST COLLECTOR, and I look forward to seeing if the quality is as good as the departed MODEL COLLECTOR. Lindsey Amrani has been the editor of MODEL COLLECTOR since July 2004, and at first, my attitude was that of a typical sexist male!  Over the years she has proved my initial thoughts as being totally wrong. She became a first-class editor, and recently she told me that she has also had to perform the duties of cutting and pasting the entire magazine with little help. Here is Lindsey's first editorial:

I have been copying the articles etc in MODEL COLLECTOR dealing with Dinky Toys as I intend disposing of my magazine copies to reduce "clutter" in our home - the word "clutter" coming from my wife!

Speaking of "wrong" I wonder what happened to the magazine, as it seemed so strong and resilient I just assumed it would always be around. But I am very angry with someone for not having the courtesy of advising all of the magazine's subscribers of its demise and what is to happen with our subscriptions. In typical Australian language, I am bloody pissed off!!Thank you again for responding to my Post.

Take care during these difficult days.
