--28 Series Vans (2)

Hi all,
Not sure if we have a thread for these, to be honest I might have done one last year, but a new 28/2 addition has got me going again.......

Managed 6 of these now in 30 years, well about 4 1/2 if you count the bits missing!

At least my new van has some 25 Series company too...

Hi all,

This is my first posting and, as requested, a bit about myself:

I am pretty much a new collector of dinky toys and certainly a novice. I have some experience of eg, the figure sets as a result of my Hornby/Meccano O gauge collecting which I do take pretty seriously.

I am especially interested in pre-war issues and, just to make it easy, am starting with the 28 series (all 3 types).

My "library" comprises the Richardsons' book, the Shire guide, 2nd edition Toy Price Guide & a book in French by Jean-Michel Roulet.

Some of the information in these books appears to conflict and not be complete (entirely as expected as more information comes to light)and I have many questions that I hope people don't mind me asking and will start with the following:

Type 1 Series:

What is a complete list of what is available, including colour variations, especially the Meccano & Hornby versions?

Why does the Toy Price Guide list a W E Boyce, Manchester Guardian and Meccano Engineering Van under "22 Series" rather than under the 28 series? (Jean's book indicates the Meccano was redesignated as 28j but I'm not sure when/why - was this the first delivery van with a livery?)

Was there any logic to the colour washes used on the wheels and were any left plain?

Which vans came with tyres and any reason why?

And finally (I expect this might start some debate) what is the order of rarity? I expect W E Boyce comes in at number 1!

All help will be much appreciated - thanks.

Stephen

Hi Stephen,
Welcome aboard!
I'm glad you like the Pre War models, and the 28's in particular, as they are my favourite Dinky Toys of all time.
I do not want to sound negative, or to put you off, and I hope you will go on to collect a decent set of these, however there are some serious drawbacks you should consider, these are incredibly fragile models, mine are all damaged or fatigued in some way, eventually they will fall apart.
It has taken me many years to get these seven (yes, I've just got another one!) as I limit myself to between

Hi Chris,

Many thanks for the advice which is much appreciated.

At this stage I haven't really looked into the 2nd and 3rd series of these vans and limited my questions to the 1st (lead) series.

From what I can tell it seems like there are perhaps not more than 20 different of these?

As regards price I would expect a fair example to exceed

Hello Stephend

Welcome to the club.

I have the answer to some of your questions about the type 1 Dinky vans.

Hi all,

I've seen the hubs / tyres "Pickfords" van too, to be honest I wasn't convinced it was genuine. I don't have many details on the Type 1, as to be honest I doubt I will ever own one!

Was the Liverpool Echo van pictured in a Meccano exhibition layout / advert? I can't recall.

On a related note, has anyone ever seen a Type 2 van with open rear windows?

Hi Dinkycollect & Chris,

Many thanks for your replies.

I have seen pictures of 2 Pickfords with white tyres sold at auction - one at Vectis a while back and one in USA last month (they are not the same van) - the surfacing of more than one of these might indicate a batch was made? If they are "correct", have any reasons why such a batch was made been put forward? A special Pickfords promotion? I had thought there might have been other 1st series vans with white tyres known as some are listed in the 2009 price; I realise now that the guide does have some errors (possibly corrected in subsequent editions).

Are plain (ie not "colour washed") wheels know for this Series?

I see the magnificent set of 6 sold at Vectis for

Hi all,
I did a bit more searching on the hubbed / tyred Pickfords van, seems I might have been a bit hasty in judgement. The one I saw was a resto for certain, however it seems that there may be some real ones out there.
As to why? I would guess simply that metal hubs came to an end, and the last few Type 1's were fitted with the new hubs and tyres. Dinky made stuff in batchs, then pulled them out of stores for assembly, bodies, hubs, etc could be in store for months / years before they were used, that is the only way to explain the oddities produced over the years, so I think it's reasonable to assume that metal hubs ran out before Type 1 bodies did.

Chris,

This is exactly what I sugested in my previous post, there are many examples of hybrid models like this. Remember that at Binns road nothing was ever scrapped.

Any pictures of a 28 type 1 van with tyres or even with tires will be welcomed.

Hi all,
Here's the Lloyd Ralston 28b / 1 with Tyres.........

And, here's my latest, a good 28w /3 Osram van, it came to me with no axles or hubs at all, luckily I had a spare Pre War axle and pair of black hubs, the tyres aren't right, but are the only ones I could squeeze on as the hubs had expanded.

Cheers,
CW.

"Borrowing" from my Hornby O gauge knowledge I completely agree nothing at Binns Road was scrapped but things were definitely done for a reason and can almost always be explained, even if sometimes the explanations now seem strange.

So, with the Pickfords, I agree that the white tyred batch must have been made when white tyres were standard (when was this? 1935?). I think the question is then were there made up Pickfords vans left over or was a batch specially made? I think it must haver been the latter as no other 28/1 white tyred vans have, I think, been seen. And then, why? As a promotional gift to Pickfords customers?

Thanks, Stephen Dabby

A few guys are interested in box numbers. As a Hornby collector you must have some boxes with an A followed by three or four digits.

A 830 Hornby Series watchman's hut.
A 1006 Hornby Series Signal Gantry No. 1.
A 1007 Hornby Series Junction Signal No. 1 dist

Could you please list those numbers with the catalogue number of the models and their name as on the box and either post it here or send it to me by email ?

Jacques.

Hi Jacques

Yes, all items after 1930 (except rails) were given code numbers. The list is huge and I would need to get this by looking at many hundreds of items! Is there a series in particular you are interested in?

Train sets TS401+
Locos L452+
Tenders TE501+
Coaches C551+
Open wagons W601+
Other rolling stock RS651+
Accessories (including Modelled Miniatures/Dinky Toys) A801 - later series A2001+ (unexplained gap between these 2 series)
Modelled Miniatures re-numbered when they became Dinky Toys
No.1 Signals also renumbered when the design changed in 1934

All of the above is from Volume 5, The Hornby Gauge O System by the Graebes.

The Pre War Gods smiled on me again.........

I love the open rear windows on these, not too cracked either, about another 69 to go then...

Hi Rob,
Ah they are wonderful, I love all Dinkys (up to about 1964 anyway!) but the Pre War 28 Series are my favourites. Lovely pair you have there, one day I will get a type 1, and a 22 motor truck too.

Hi all,
It's been listed a few times on UK EBAY too, very nice, but way too steep for me.

Hello Chris

Yes, you did post another thread and Jacques has asked me to put a link to a more recent one to enable him to later combine all these into a single thread for both the prewar and post-war models. I have another two threads to do! My homework for this morning! :woohoo:
