Some more Foden fun.....here are some closeups of the Type 1 and Type 2 cabs.....lovely creations with nice flowing lines and some very vivid colors from Meccano!

Hi Terry, nice close-ups of your Fodens!
One little question: I would expect herringbone or round tread tyres on the 1st type cab version hubs. Now I see the black block tread version on yours, which I always date at 1953 or after, which would be later than 1952 when the first type was suddenly discontinued and made place for the 2nd type. Or was that disconuation not so sudden and might this be a special, slightly later USA-export solution? Do you know of other USA-based first types with apparently original tyre profiles like this one?

Kind regards, Jan

Here is a typical Dinky loading scene:

As a child the only Guy Van I ever owned was the Spratts dog food version and I also had a Coventry Climax Fork Lift Truck.

The scene above is reminiscent of many hours I had as a child with these two fabulous toys.

I used to really appreciate the items with lots of play value such as the fork lift, the car transporter and the cranes.

Happy Days!!!!

Jan--So sorry for not responding sooner.....I have to help our daughter out this time of year by watching her 3 daughters (our granddaughters) while she works (she is a tax CPA here). But anyway, as usual sharp eyes you have! That was an early photography effort, taken some time ago....and I had not changed out those incorrect tires yet for the original "herringbone" style. I originally bought that, and several other Type 1 Foden's from a chap in England (about 12 years ago). They were all in very nice condition, but that one was missing its original tires, which he pointed out to me. And it is a very early Foden, missing both the later tow hook and the later tanker slots. I was able to buy some correct looking style tires for it from Jim Noble, and the picture below shows them...along with a few other nice Foden shots........
Terry

This picture shows the Supertoys tires used right after the "herringbone" style...around 1952

Dave--That picture with the Fork Lift truck also brought back lots of memories. Like you, I also really enjoyed the play value with it, and also the anti-aircraft gun. I loved the way you could swivel the turret around, and then raise and lower it. I also liked the old field gun unit, as you coul un-hitch the units. I fondly remember being only 5 or 6 years old and playing with my few Dinky's on a bedspread on my bed. It had a neat pattern woven through it that was almost like a road, and I would run my cars around it. So many memories we all have of those long ago years, and how precious that we can re-live them today! And you are right, the cranes and the car transporter were right up there as fun to play with....thanks for sharing a memorable scene!!

Thanks for explaining Terry, it was a bit confusing to me, but now it's clear! Jan

Dave, you just be careful with the new cable: it has to get its place, so just do not overstress/overload it at the beginning...LOL.

Lovely Fodens Terry! Your Type 1 Chain lorry is lovely, sadly mine has fatigue in the bed and is cracking quite badly :(

Jan,

You are lucky to have found the French issue in excellent conditions, one does not see many of them.

Jacques, a more closer look here:

Also, please note the typical very shiny French axle.

And another photography special:

Jan,

Thank you for the picture of the base plate of this very rare variation, specially in this state. This model was advertised in the 1959 catalogue but without any mention that it was assembled in France.

I do not intend to get off-topic, but I wonder if there is a 'rule' for the type of cord adopted for these hoisting vehicles. I have the impression that the French use red cords and the British green ones. This goes for my French example, but my British 972 has a mix of red and green, as does your French example, Richard.
Of course the cords can easily be swapped, but still I would like to find evidence for the original way of stringing.
By the way, your French 972 is a beauty, Richard, and a little earlier, as it is fitted with the original round treaded black French tyres, which I may assume to be original. Best regards, Jan

Unlisted variation :

Jan's truck which is a later production of the same year as Richard's has a small bump under the word FRANCE.

It is always good to have many photos.

Five nice Leyland Octopuses

Our members will all know four of them, the interloper on the right is a white metal kit from A Smith Automodels which I assembled some years ago. It is the same scale as the Dinky wagons so it fits in nicely with them.

Good morning
I have just registered as a new member. Originally from the Netherlands, I escaped the lousy weather and live in New Zealand now.
I collect mainly DTs from the fifties but somehow a few newer ones have found their way in as well.
I will try to post a photo. Not sure how I got 30 Dinky items all in one picture.
Greetings/Groeten from Downunder. Wilfried

Welcome aboard, Wilfried! Sure our Dinkies are helping in getting the Big World a lot smaller...
Very nice set-up you have there! Reminds me of the Kingsbury Motors Austin-Morris garage I worked as a lad in the early '60's...
Cordially,
Jacques H.

Welcome aboard Wilfried, a lovely set-up you have there. It is great fun doing these as I found out last year when I did my Dinky book.

That is a superb picture Wilfried! I love this kind of diorama, using the Dinky accessories to their full effect. Even on a shelf in the model cabinet a few accessories add a lot of life and interest to the display.

Wilfried--Another welcome from a fellow Dinky fan! I am from the U.S. and am also a big fan of 1950's Dinky's, and love your scene....a kind of tribute to Austin.....very nicely done! You will enjoy this site, lots of good discussion and pictures, we look forward to hearing more from you.

A selection of Visi-pac boxes:

I bought these to complete my collection of different types of Dinky packaging.

They are quite rare as they are fragile and I don't think too many have survived.

I will not be buying any more unless some different military items become available as this is my main collecting area.

Dave

The first Visi-Pac box has been issued in August 1964 for the T model Ford.

David,

As far as I know, ten military models have been packed in yellow or gold or both Visi-Pacs.

626 Military ambulance
651 Centurion tank
661 Recovery tractor
665 Honest John missile launcher
670 Daimler armoured car
674 Austin Champ
697 25 pdr. field gun set

825 D.U.K.W.
826 Dépanneuse Berliet
827 E.B.R. Panhard FL 10

The Visi-Pacs for French models are even rarer than the English ones but how many remain complete with the strip to be removed by the dealler ?

The French ones have never been available in France.
