Richard---very nice acquisitions! I especially like the French Studebaker truck series, and have a few myself. And that Guy Truck appears to be in very good condition, along with a nice box...congrats!

Thank you Terry and Dave for your kind message.
Yes, I am very happy with my new babies, specially for the Renault 4L which is in a hard blue colour, not so easy to find !
Kind regards
Richard

Hi Richard, I understand that you have become a father. Congratulations, you didn't tell me about that in Derby. The Guy is really great.
If I had only ONE of those early versions ...
Kind regards, Jan

Just received a couple of new Dinky models this past week, filling in gaps in my collection up to about 1959. The first one is another that I had just neglected getting all these years, as it was not high on my priority list. Now, however, I am discovering new joy in adding in some of these, as I now feel all of the Dinky's from the 1950's are worth having, and all still have all those wonderful traits that endure most of us to that era. It is the Muir Hill Dumper Truck, and I was able to find an older one in mint boxed condition. This is a fairly large, heavy toy, with lots of play value....the driver in his seat swivels around, and the rear dumper bed raises and lowers, and the front axle turns. My box has a date code from 1953 and the color is the older yellow matching the Elevator Loader and Goods Yard Crane. Later models I believe got lighter in color and eventually the old steel wheels gave way to rubber tractor tires. The box is amazing and must have been stored away for a very long time. It has not faded at all, still bright and crisp. All in all, this is another very well done Dinky, with an abundance of detail, and I am very happy to have found such a nice one!

The other new model that arrived is the Military Ambulance #626. This was introduced in 1956, originally without a driver, then with a driver, and finally with windows. Mine appears to be from around 1957/1958. This is a heavy model for its size, due to the enclosed care area behind the cab with opening doors....kind of like a miniature Guy Van. Another nicely detailed, very solid model.

Great additions, Terry, and in wonderful shape!
As far as I am aware the Military Ambulance always had a driver - as all suitable military vehicles had from end 1954 on (some lost it again in the course of the 1960s I presume).
I have three Muir-Hill Dumpers, some especially because of the diference in box designs. A wonderful model:

Kind regards, Jan

Here is the announcement from the September 1956 Meccano Magazine for the 626 Military Ambulance which definitely had a driver right from the start.

As far as I know the only change was adding windows. If there are some out there without drivers they will be factory errors.

No, Richard, it isn't missing. Of most British DT's of these years I have the French equivalent. Here it is (on the right), in a rather unusual presentation, a photo I made in order to demonstrate the extra washer between the French body and front bogie:

Nice new finds Terry!
As a kid I always thought the Ambulance was a Commer because of the cab, I didn't know that Motor Panels etc made cabs that were used by other chassis makers.

I agree with you Dave. At the beginning in 1956 without windows and in 1962 with windows.
This ambulance had always a driver.
The differences are in the boxes. I have seen 5 boxes :
-With drawings on two sides.
-Without drawings with reference number on a red oval on the opening sides.

that's all folks!
Richard

-Box red and yellow
-Box with "Dinky Toys" in italic
-Glazed yellow box

and one that I have never seen : Glazed gilded gold box

This is my French dumper, the tyes are marked MECCANO and the base plate is stamped " DINKY SUPERTOYS - DUMPER MUIR-HILL - ASSEMBLE EN FRANCE - MECCANO PARIS - 887. There are at least nine different boxes for this model.

The 626 Military Ambulance also came in both Yellow and Gold Visi-pak export boxes - these are quite rare as they are very fragile.

Here is one of my Fordson Ambulances in a Gold box.

The export Visi-pak boxes should always contain an ambulance with windows

Dave, how is such a model fixed onto the base? I presume the model will not be allowed to rattle around in its visipac box.
Kind regards, Jan

If you look underneath each axle there is a hole.

Underneath the hole there is a plastic strip which is longer than the hole.

A rubber band is placed over each axle and wrapped around the plastic underneath to retain the model I will post a photo tomorrow.

This is the Visi-box for my 138 Hillman Imp:

The red plastic parts and the rubber bands are what retain the model in the box.

The box has to be taken apart to remove the model, this means that effectively the model cannot subsequently be stored in it. Whilst it is excellent for display purposes in the shop its further use after purchase is extremely limited.

I think this is why so few survive.

Arrived this morning.
Not new but complete !

And I discovered that the letters "DINKY SUPERTOYS GUY" on the base are bigger on the "Golden Shred" than on the "Spratts"

Kind regards
Richard

To all--Sorry that I did not reply back sooner to the comments on my post about the 626 Military Ambulance. I had commented that it had been available with and without a driver, and many of you disagreed with that. I did go back today and check my sources, and it states that in 3 different books: GB of DT, Dinky Toys and Modelled Miniatures (both by Richardson), and lastly, the Force Dinky Books. I realize that none of these are infallible, and possible that they have mis-stated this fact, and the fact that none of you have seen one would indicate they are at least quite rare, if at all. Almost always some controversy with Dinky's, part of which leads to fun discussion and speculation!

This table seem to mean that there were two dies.

The early one without the triangles on each side of the number plate, with the four little brackets to attach the axles was used for the four first issues : Slumberland, Lyons, Weetabix and Spratt's. The brackets were used only for the Slumberland and the Lyons after which the die was modified so that the brackets could be deleted.

Around or in 1954 a second die was used with a narrower marking, the word GUY is smaller and it has the triangles. This die was used for the Ever Ready and the Golden Shred.

I do not have all these vans or pictures of the bases. Could some one provide these pictures for the Spratt's and Lyons.

Please let me know if any of your vans is different from the table above.

Jacques--
Here are pictures of all of my Guy Van bases, so hopefully this will help! I also noticed that the casting bosses on each side of the word Dinky are slightly larger on the last two vans.
Terry

first is the Slumberland

then the Lyons

then the Weetabix

then the Spratt's

then the Ever Ready

and lastly, the Golden Shred

Terry,

Thank you for posting these pictures, they confirm that there were two Guy Vixen dies.

Also the reference changed from 514 to 91x when the hubs changed from ridged to Supertoys and the boxes changed from blue to white with blue stripes in or after May 1953.

Just received another new Dinky in the mail this week, filling in some holes in my collection. This one is the Bedford End Tipper, and I found a nearly mint one at a very reasonable price. It did not come with a box, but I am more concerned about the models than the boxes, so not a big concern. I believe this color scheme is a more recent one, and the paint is bright and shiny, so has been well taken care of.

Congratulations Terry! The imperfection making it 'nearly mint' is hard to find. Does it have to do with moving parts knocking or rubbing each other? Of course the wanting box isn't really important, but still I am very fond of those honest and straightforward constructions and designs, the natural (but unintentional) use of environmental friendly materials, which are so often replaced by clamorous designs and colours, and abundant use of plastics nowadays. Indeed a miracle that it survived in such a pristine state in spite of this. Kind regards, Jan

Terry, that Bedford Tipper is absolutely gorgeous I love that colour scheme.

These four arrived for me today:

I will try to find a box for the Rover, I have trade boxes for the Rileys and the Light Tank.

Thanks......I am very happy with the Bedford. Now I need to find the wagon version in like condition. I do not see too many of either of these on eBay lately, so it might take awhile to find the right one. Jan, there is a tiny chip on the right front fender...the size of a pinhead, so that is what keeps it from being mint. But I got a very good deal, so it was within my personal standards. The rest of the paint is brilliant and nearly perfect. Dinky did a wonderful job usually with their painting.
And Dave, nice bunch of new Dinky's that you received....I like all of those, so well done! That cream Riley is really nice........I also had to get a replacement light tank a few years ago. My original one had long since lost its antenna and one of the the chains.
