Just arrived from France today: the common tank transporter, Tracteur Berliet et semi-remorque porte-char, French no. 890, which I was looking out for in order to accommodate the no. 80c A.M.X. Tank.

An incredible bargain in nice condition, boxed with insert, which nevertheless will need some cleaning. After that I hope to replace this snapshot by some nicer pictures soon. Kind regards, Jan

That appears to be another lovely Dinky model! I also have been on the trail of one of these for a while, and had a new in box one here in the states, but had to pass on it as I have already over extended this month! But that will look very nice with the AMX Tank on it....nice addition!

Congratulations Jan an other mint boxed model in your collection.

Unfortunately, this model is not a reproduction of a French Army tank transporter.

The tractor is a model of a single prototype and the trailer said to be modeled from a Coder is in fact a Meccano design.

The original picture is 2048 pixels wide, if you want it I can send it by email.

Hi all,

Simply lovely Jan!

Sadly my new additions this week are in no where near such nice condition, I'm glad to have them though as they tick a couple of colour variations off that have been on my list a long time.

Late issue Autotransporter, sadly lost it's tailgate, got this thanks to a good mate downunder, probably came in a lovely gold export box 50 years ago.

Commer in cream / blue, bit battered but fills a gap in the line!

A new arrival a few months ago, a very nice 981 Horsebox with its Australian price showing, 29/9. The model and box came from Leonard Joel Auctioneers in Melbourne, who also have an online bidding site. The model is a replacement for my original that "someone" threw out "because it had become too chipped"! That "someone" was certainly not me! At least I still have the original box that my departed Horsebox once occupied, and it too bears the same price.

Nice addition there...especially to replace a "trashed, chipped Dinky"....what an inglorious end that was to the poor model! The Horse Box was always one of my favorites as a young collector....so big and painted a very nice color, and those opening ramp/doors. I still have my original U.S. version, purchased new from H.Hudson Dobson before 1960, and still very nice....I will have to take some new photos and post one of it. Congrats on a nice Dinky!

I just purchased another one, through an online auction near Sydney, in New South Wales, "Trains, Planes and Automobiles" that run their monthly Toy auctions through www.invaluable.com. (There will be no auction in October.) I have also added a 642 to the collection. We all look forward to seeing images of your 980.

642 is the RAF pressure refueller
980 is the Horse van Express U.S. version.

Terry,can you please show the box for your Express horse van with 980 ?

For some unknown reason, #642 was only referred to by Meccano as "Pressure Refueller" and not "RAF Pressure Refueller". The side panel on the box does mention that the original is a six-wheel R.A.F. vehicle used on aerodromes for refuelling and defuelling aircraft. However in sales literature such as catalogues and price lists it was simply known as 642 Pressure Refueller. This is similar to how we have started referring to at least one other model by a name it never bore - 944 Leyland Octopus Shell-BP Fuel Tanker, when in fact it was only known by Meccano as 944 Shell-BP Fuel Tanker, no mention of it being a Leyland Octopus.

As neither the 642 or the 944 were ever referred to as Leyland vehicles it begs the question; was there a rift between Meccano and Leyland?

The official name of some models is sometime peculiar and does not refer to the manufacturer of the prototype.

For example, in the case of the Elevator Loader the official name is "ELEVATOR LOADER" but the full name "BARBER GREENE OLDING ELEVATOR LOADER" is engraved in the hopper. There must be many other examples.

I do not think that there was a case with Leyland, at the time there were enough truck manufacturers in England and Meccano could have choosen some of the other.

The car carriers 984 and 989 are not named Leyland either, the double deckers have no marque either.

Just arrived from the Vectis auction last week:

The Leyland Forward Control Lorry, Austin Wagon and Austin Devon will go into trade boxes.

The Frazer Nash is new to me and I love it, I need a trade box for this now.

They are all nice and were very reasonably priced.

By the way, I agree with Jacques on the naming issue. In my opinion there is nothing to worry about or worth explaining about this. Names on the model itself, in Meccano Magazine, in the various official and unofficial catalogues, leaflets and other advertising, on the boxes, in varying periods, and what else are used very inconsistently, and mostly unintentional or simply for practical reasons. Hi Richard

The newly received Austin Wagon is definitely the one without the tin tilt (cover) as it is marked 30j on the baseplate.

I have three Blue Austins in the trade box and two are shown above my existing one on the left which is marked 30s and the new one on the right which is marked 30j. The third Blue one in the trade box does not have a number.

Gentlemen

The post today brought my latest acquisition, a 102 MG Midget Sports in Touring Finish, orange with red hubs and interior. A truly excellent addition to my collection, and who says quality items are difficult to obtain through eBay! This version joins its fellow stablemate in green. I have had a number of green MG Midgets, including the near mint boxed example still in my collection but finding a good quality 102 in orange and at a reasonable price has proved elusive- until now!

Collecting Dinky Toys can give so much pleasure when unpacking a parcel to find a mint 25E Tipper with smooth hubs and an open chassis. Even the plating left on the radiator still shines after almost 60 years. Fantastic!

Just received two new Dinky's over this past weekend, so always fun to open each and see them for the first time. The first one is a model I should have bought years ago, but just never got around to it...the #669 U.S. Army Jeep. This is a very nice representation of a real Jeep from that era (around 1955), and this one arrived in not mint, but excellent condition, along with a decent box. It did arrive with the large smooth tires, not the later treaded ones, so am guessing it was made around 1955 or 1956. The U.S. Dinky catalogs so this in model in the 1955, 1956, and 1957 catalogs. The box does not show the picture of the Jeep, so am assuming that is also an earlier box.

The other new arrival this past weekend was the #893 Unic Saharien Pipe Truck. Many years ago, I had purchased its "cousin", the Willeme Log Truck, and then the Unic Car Transporter, but for some reason I never had followed through on this nice truck. I was lucky to find one virtually new in the box....it certainly has never been played with, and doesn't appear to have even been displayed for any amount of time...no telltale dust anywhere. This is a fairly early one, as it has the perforated support beam, running the length of the trailer. And it also has the earlier ridged front wheels. Later versions also featured white wheels for the two spares mounted on the rear of the cab.......does anyone know why Dinky would have chosen different color wheels for those spares?

Wow, Terry, those are nice additions! As the French Tracteur Unic Saharien is concerned, my story goes almost parallel to yours. Ever since the French started with their double rear wheels on the larger commercials, I was very much impressed with the realistic looks of those, and my preference went to the French Supertoys. Lateron I specialized in the British ones again, because of their 'nostaligic naivety' on that point. It's a mere ten years ago that I surrendered again for these French ones. This is not a new arrival, but seeing Terry and Jan's photos of their 893, I had a look at my example (which must have had a rough life in the Sahara, dropping its load of pipes and picking up a rubber band :laugh: ) but then I noticed the cab and engine hood were of a different colour to the chassis and trailer, as well as the hubs. Any reason for this apart from a possible repaint which I think it is not.
