-966 Leyland Marrel Multi-Bucket Unit (1960-64)

Following on from the 960 Albion Cement/Concrete mixer, the very first issues of the 966 Marrel multi-bucket had a fault where the 'arms' flopped forward over the bucket and disconnected from the shaft. Meccano corrected this by putting a block on the casting ahead of the arms. The date in the box for Bruce is 11/60.

Nowadays we would call this a skip lorry, here it is in action:

From my post in the 960 Lorry Mounted Concrete Mixer, the following is relevant to the 966:

In bricklaying, out here we referred to the bonding agent between bricks as mortar. Cement, as I stated was a mixture of sand and cement. But be it as it may, up until the late 1950s, large concrete works necessitated the construction of a small mixing plant on site. This was quite expensive and time consuming until the creation of a special vehicle that could bring the concrete to the construction site from the plant. In a similar fashion, the 966 Marrel Multi-Bucket system was invented, or as it is known out here, the skip bucket designed to expeditiously remove construction waste. Both these special vehicles were an innovation and Meccano saw fit to model them both using different cab-chassis, Albion for the mixer and Leyland for the Multi-Bucket, both models coming from the same Leyland Group stable.

Kind regards

Bruce

Photo by courtesy of Vectis Auctions.

David Sierra is the very lucky winner of a rare and so far unlisted variation of the 966 Marrel Multi-Bucket truck.

The truck seems to be the standard one but the skip is striped and looks like it is made of plastic.

Please David, let us know if your truck is of the early or later type, with or without the limiting boses shown above by Ron Ford ? I would guess that it is a very late issue.

It would be interesting to see a picture of the underside of the skip.

Is there a date stamp on the box ?

Hi from Aotearoa,

I was inspired by fellow Kiwi's 966 Marrel Multi-bucket unit with ribbed sides to the bucket, to seek out one like it for my collection. A search on eBay brought up one that was at a reasonable Buy Now price, so I did! Not in as good a condition as David's one (yellow chips easily), but presentable:

I would say this was a later issue. The bucket is metal but unfortunately, there is no date stamp in the box..
