Displays and displaying (cont...)

Could be a nice idea Jacques. But first I will have to complete my painting, glass cutting, cleaning and re-arranging of all display units. Perhaps a nice idea to write a kind of illustrated report of this operation in the light of the need of continuous maintenance and improvement of collection display facilities.
Below a first idea of the goal to be attained: more spacious placing of the models by inserting a total of some extra 20 meters of shelves (one added to each unit), and better visibility and brightness of the models by changing over to a pure white background in the displays.
An evening-light snap-shot of two units which are almost finished and re-arranged. The top shelves are 225 cm above the floor, which produces an impressive but transparent and spacious 'Dinky-wall' effect.

Kind regards, Jan

Hi Jan,
Lovely display, really shows the models off to full advantage, I really wish I had gone for deeper cabinets and a lighter background.

Those are looking really nice! You mentioned cutting glass......are you cutting your own glass shelves? Are you starting with the correct width and just cutting to the length you need? Do you polish the cut edges??? Just curious!

Hi Terry, I have had so many displays in three decades and I always keep any glass that remains from whatever disposed of in the house, that there is always some piece of glass that I can re-use in a new setting, so I cut it in the right size, lenghtwise and/or width. For the vast majority of the shelves I have it done, of course: less effort, trouble and cumputerized cut. They always ask if the edges have to be polished, but that isn't necessary, they look very clean, it saves costs, they are secure behind the front glass doors (which have been polished of course), and after all I'm still alive. Kind regards, Jan

Hi Jan.
How is your way to arrange your "dinky" in the displays ?
On the last photo I can see buses on different shelves, two Streamlined Fire engine in two different displays, and so on !
I would be very curious to know that !
Friendly yours.

Hello Richard, the photo shows two of four display units on top which I gave a completely random arrangement as contents is concerned. That does not matter, because the order and categorisation of the collection is to be found in my catalogue and my displays are for attractive presentation. These four display units contain the smaller, mostly equally sized Dinky Toys. Of those there are many models in several variants. For some this means that these variants have to be placed together, but for presentation I think this is rather boring, so I scattered them all randomly over the shelves.
Other non-visible units, however, have more systematically arranged models: agriculture, military, vans with advertising, fire engines, aeroplanes, ships, large commercials etc. Besides that, the central unit, which stretches from floor to ceiling, is filled with pre-war and early post-war Dinky's only.
In some instances one cannot be strict. Think of a book cabinet, where it is virtually impossible to have all books on the same subject together, just because of differences in height of the volumes concerned.
Kind regards, Jan

Jan--
Looks like you are "on a roll" and making very good progress! It all looks very nice and am sure you will be glad to be done, then able to enjoy the fruits of your labor, and then move on to your catalog work.

Hi Dave, this could be a nice 'excuse' to organize another familiar houseparty for Dinky intimates next spring, if strategically chosen coinciding with a Houten fair weekend!
Terry, yes, the catalogue is waiting again, but meanwhile the paint was drying I have compiled my annual Dinky calendar for 2015 yesterday. I can hardly wait for the printed result to be delivered, at the end of this week.
Richard, indeed the additional meters of shelves will easily accommodate about 20% more miniatures in a very spacious layout. The complete overhaul should be finished in the course of next week, after a period of merely three weeks.
Kind regards, Jan

Unit 9 refurbished: new white background, 2 extra shelves inserted, models' condition checked, and contents reshuffled - turning the former rather crowded display into a pleasant, spacious presentation. Another two to go!

Jan,
If you really don't know what to do in the next few months, I know a room in my house, that is waiting to welcome you and your tools !!

Jocking apart, which is the dimension space between two shelves ?
Thank you
Richard

Hi Richard, I have a very long to-do list for the time being, but I will keep that in mind! No doubt there will be good wines available every day!
The interval between two holes for the shelf supports is exactly 5,0 cm. So you can count what you see. Most shelves have a distance in between of 10 cm, occasionally less, occasionally more. The shelves of this unit are 90 cm long each. I can vary flexibly, the way I planned and built them, 24 years ago now, and they still comply with my demands, with some adjustments every now and then! Kind regards, Jan

For sure Jan ! I have some "Bordeaux" like "Puisseguin-St Emilion" or "Lalande de Pomerol" from 1997 to 2007 that are famous ! If you prefer white wine, I have also a very good "Riesling" from Alsace area.

Thank you for the informations.
kind regards

Richard

Time to introduce myself as a new member to the DTCA.

I am Swiss, 69 years of age, living in Thailand since 22 years.

Over the years, I have assembled an (almost) complete collection of all the Dinky Toys racing-, sportsracing- and record cars, both from England and France, pre- and post war up to 1964.

This is how I have put them on display in our living room here in Hua Hin. On the left side, in the display cabinets, are all the first issues, complete, whereas in the cabinet on the right are all the variations (almost complete).

Since not all of you are able or willing to visit us here in Hua Hin, I herewith allow you a short glimpse into our living room, where a Pocher Alfa Romeo continues to try to steal the show from my Dinkies. By the way, my wife of 45 years (Swiss, not Thai!) likes this display almost as much as I do.

Best regards to all of you and I am looking forward to become an active member.

Walter--A hearty welcome from the U.S.! You will enjoy this site; many experts on all things Dinky here and good discussion on many topics. We will all look forward to seeing some of your collection, and it looks like a nice display you have.

My newly created small display for changing exhibits:

A simple design, just empty one shallow book shelf under the stairs, cloth the interior with some nice matching velvet and put a snugly fitting piece of glass in front of it (removed on the zoomed-in photos).
It's the only appearance of Dinky Toys in my living room, a small 'window' to the actual collection, also for ship models and whatever special, displayable items.
Because the conditions of conservation are not as optimal as in my hobby room, I intend to change the contents about every month.
A nice temporary closer look to some selected items!

Kind regards, Jan

Hi all, I am making the first steps these days in preparing and designing my contribution for the golden jubilee NAMAC exhibition, to be held in the splendid Louwman Museum on automobile history, The Hague, in July 2015.
Just thought that you might like to view one trial configuration for a display shelf showing a selection of Anglo-French Dinky Toys counterparts. The end result of this process will have a much more professional looks than this quick experiment, no doubt! About 100 of my Dinky Toys will be on display. Over 100 contributors will show their miniature cars on this unique anniversary occasion!

Kind regards, Jan

Hi Ronald, I made an announcement under the 'events' header some time ago. The link there seems to be dead now, but it's easy to google NAMAC and find more details there.
Anyway, the exhibition is to be viewed from 1 July - 9 August 2015, in the Louwman Museum.

Great Hall of the museum

From Wikipedia:

"The collection of over two hundred cars has been assembled since 1934 by two generations of the Louwman family. It is the oldest private collection of automobiles in the world open to the public. The collection was founded in 1934 with the purchase of a 20 year-old Dodge by Dodge importer Pieter Louwman, the father of the current owner. In 1969, the collection of Mr. Geerlig Riemer was added. Riemer was also founder of the Institute for Automotive and Management (IVA) in Driebergen. The building which used to house Riemer's collection has since been used as a practical center for the IVA.

The current owner of the collection is Evert Louwman, the Dutch importer of Lexus, Toyota and Suzuki. In 1969 the collection was moved to Leidschendam to the newly opened National Automobile Museum. In 1981 the museum was moved to a new location on the property of importer Louwman & Parqui in Raamsdonksveer. On 18 April 2003 the name "Louwman Collection" was adopted.

The collection is internationally oriented and consists of over 230 automobiles. From the period up to 1910 the museum has the largest collection of cars in the world. The museum displays a large collection of the current remaining 15 classic cars of the Dutch brand Spyker and the only remaining Eysink (a car-brand from Amersfoort). In the former museum of Raamsdonksveer these Dutch cars used to be displayed at the so-called "Trompenburg Square" with original fence of the original Spyker-factory, dismantled in 1993.

From post-World War II the museum features a car of Winston Churchill, the Aston Martin DB5 used in the James Bond movie Goldfinger, and a Cadillac of Elvis Presley.

The former collection of old cars of the Dutch Autotron in Rosmalen had been on display since 2005 in Raamsdonksveer, and was moved to the new museum in The Hague. The Autotron has not had an automotive museum since its reorganisation in 2007.

The museum also displays a large collection of paintings and drawings by Frederick Gordon Crosby."

Yes it's really great, and I consider it as an honour for the NAMAC (and myself) to have the opportunity to present ourselves in that 'vintage car palace' with our various collections.
Mind you, it's about miniature cars in general, so Dinky Toys are just a part of it. But the 1:1 vintage cars are really marvellous, and all other automobilia connected with that.
We could make arrangements of course. I will volunteer for four days to be present as a host, but almost any date in that period will suit me. For whoever would like to visit NL in that period, it may be good to know that preceding the closing date of the exhibition, on August 8, there will be another Houten Fair, as always organized by the NAMAC. Nice to combine ...
Kind regards, Jan

Greetings everybody,

further to my recent post on the 'Red/Yellow panel box' thread where I posted a picture of one of my display cabinets containing these models, here are a couple more pictures which are of the adjoining cabinets, first with post-1960 models and some early (1954 and on) Trade Packs:

And then a cabinet with some 'overflow' models from my main displays: some pre-war and early post-war models, Guys and Fodens in early blue boxes, and my collection of 555/955 Fire Engines as per Jan's detailed article several years ago (coincidentally I had also built up a collection of the model and box variations similar to Jan's, except that I managed to procure a 'Visi-pac' model from Keith Harvie some years ago):

I hope you will forgive the two Morestone AA Motorcycle patrols which found there way in here, the patrolmen must be answering a call?

Hope you find something of interest here!

Regards to all, Adrian (141)
