--34a and 580 Berliet benne carrières Marrel [Berliet Marrel Quarry Truck] (1955-1970)

This Berliet benne carrière(s) Marrel, model of a Berliet GLM 10 dump truck (1953) is one of the most common French Dinky Toys, as it was in the catalogues from 1955 till 1970. Still, it was a remarkable one, as it was the first ever Dinky Toy with double rear wheels, a new and very realistic feature. It is of medium size with its 1/55 scale, but if the general English Supertoys scale of 1/48 would have been adopted it would have come closer in size to the big no. 965 Euclid Rear Dump Truck. It is a faithful and finely finished model, moreover including a unconventional new tipping mechanism, another feature in which it was the comparable English models far ahead. It passed the familiar changes of the French models: renumbering in 1959 to 580 and the coinciding change from convex to concave wheel hubs. Also the round treaded 20mm tyres were replaced by block treaded ones around that year. Another obvious difference is the later introduction of a hub for a never introduced spare tyre under the rear of the chassis. Later on the dark blue of the cab and chassis turned a little lighter blue, but no other finish changes took place during its long life. The heavy, sturdy container was made by the French manufacturer of this heavy duty material, Marrel. The model itself shows the lettering ‘BENNE MARREL’ right under the front of the container, the piece above the cab.

The mock-up of this model is still in existence, as Roulet shows in his second edition of ‘Les Dinky Toys et Dinky Supertoys français’, page 345.

The year 1955 showed many novelties in the French Dinky range, quite a few of them in the medium size smaller scale commercial / emergency models, like the Delahaye Fire Engine (32d), the Simca Cargo trucks and vans (33), and the Citroën Breakdown truck (35a). Most groups of them complete in 1957. In advertisements on the back cover of the French Meccano Magazine the Berliet Dump Truck is often seen with the also 1955 introduced no. 33c Simca Cargo miroitier, the glass lorry.

As said, the Berliet benne carrières is common and easily found, even in mint / boxed condition. Both its long life and the competition with the cheap Atlas replica (which looks very sterile and ‘clean’ compared with the original) make it relatively affordable too.

Kind regards, Jan

Dear Jan,

I am sorry for you that your good article has been ruined by this site. The text has become difficult to read because the site is not wysiwyg and all your good pictures have been cropped.

The tiny 9 in. screens have gone a long time ago, so why is this site so narrow ? One should be able to post an A4 page in scale 1/1 size which is 826 pixels

All the best.

Jacques

I had written some comments about the Berliet variations but as I still can not see the upload picture button, my post is meaning less so I have deleted it.

I had tried drag and drop, the pictures did show in the editing box but not in the preview or the saved windows !

I am sorry if you have received several emails about this thread but the software should not send emails when one edits a post.

I was in England yesterday and the man who runs the B & B where I was staying is a Dinky Toys collector. I suggested to him to look at the DTCA website but it is not even listed on Google !

Hi Jan.

Very good job on the "Berliet benne carrières".

I just add 2 photos showing the concav version with its box and my three "Berliet" with an orange colour shade in the middle.

Friendly yours

Richard

Sorry but I don't know how to join the photos to this message.

Will see later

Hi Jacques and Richard, it was only that I happened to have a look at the status of this contribution of mine that I saw your comments. I still get no notification emails at all. But I trust Dave Kaun will do something about hat.

I agree that it seems that only a first post in a thread allows uploading images, and the subsequent replies/comments do not. That is not what we want of course. Also for Dave Kaun to pay attention to.

The uploaded images, however, allow for a much bigger size than before, in practice almost infinite if not exceeding the [many] MB's allowed. I experimented with mine, and only when you click on the images you can see them full size. In fact you get a kind of slide presentation. I chose for a pixel width of 1200, and I'm really impressed with the result. Disadvantage is that the images are curiously cropped in the initial presentation, and it stiil seems to be impossible to mix text and images. Also to the attention of Dave, who is now executing a massive job of transferring a lot of data from the old website to the new. I trust after that he will have more time to pay attention to the problems we just noted. Kind regards, Jan

I can't speak for everyone, but the continued lack of updates regarding this site, and what is happening to it, what is being worked on, or even a projected timetable, is both appaling and inexcusable, even though the work is voluntary and there is lots of it. It is hard to maintain an interest when so much needs to be addressed, but there are no comments or updates from those involved.....not even brief ones! This will be the last time I am going to mention this, as comments here are not responded to.
