-501 - 505 and 901 - 905 + 941 & 942 Foden types 1 & 2 (1952-1964)

The various Foden models have always been very popular and one of the "musts" for most Dinky collectors. Between the earlier Type 1 versions and the later Type 2, plus color variations, there are many to collect. Here are mine, arranged in pairs, showing both early and later versions together. Let's see yours as well.......!!!

Splendid these trucks !
It is a pity that they are so expensive when they are in good conditions !!
I only have 14 in playwith conditions.

Just found this Forum section on Fodens. Here is my parade. There are also some other Commercials on the picture. I would really like to make an article on the Fodens. I think my collection is more or less complete with around 50 examples. There are a few versions out there which I do not trust to be original, like the all orange and all yellow Tailboards and the two tone green Wagon. Apart from these three my collection should be complete and could form the basis of an article.

Rob,

Fascinating.

It's a good thing that you have all of them because there is no more room in your cabinet.

What a fantastic display Rob, wonderful!
Sadly my budget will only stretch to playworn, but it is inspiring to see you've managed so many variations, just about all by the look of it?
Do I spy a Foden Mk2 Tanker in plain 2 tone blue in there? If so any chance of some close up pictures of model and box?
Cheers
CW.

Hello Chris,

You did spot the 504 2nd in TT blue, next to the red/fawn and the cherry red /fawn 2nd tanker. Here are some close ups.

Hello Jan,
That is a promise, but it will have to wait until I find some time. I might need
some help as well.
Kind regards,
Rob

Rob--Wow, what a Foden collection! Wonderful to see so many variations...for me, it has been a challenge to just get one of each basic model and type. That two tone blue Type 2 is just gorgeous and has to be rare...thanks for showing us!

Thank you for the pictures Rob, it is one of the Fodens I have never seen for real, so it really helps to get a good set of photos. The box is lovely too, the only other box for these I saw a picture of was H Hudson Dobson stickered, which made me wonder if these went to the USA, but yours shows some were sold over in Europe too.
Cheers,
Chris Warr.

Thanks very much for the kind words on my Foden collection. It took my 25 years to complete, so in average I bought 2 models per year. I remember the first one, a boxed 504 TT blue tanker 1st type with a silver flash. Cost me
300 Dutch Guilders, around GBP 85,-. Which was a lot money at the time!

Here are two dark grey 501 Wagons. In some catalogues the one with the black
chassis is not mentioned. Before I bought it I had seen this version sold
for mega money at QDT. I was very lucky to find one, it was not properly
described on a website and I could buy it for a very fair price.

Rob,

Here is one that may be missing to your fabulous collection. It is probably from the pilot lot made in 1947 before the markings were added to the die.

Beautiful display of Fodens Rob.
I too have a mint collection but think I am 4 behind you.The 902 Red and Green with rivet back, 903 Red and Grey with plastic wheels, 903 Blue and Grey and the 501 Grey with black chassis have eluded me although I have taken a back seat in pursuing these in the last few years.
Any chance you could post a couple of pictures of the 902 Red/Green with rivet back ? :)
Agreed, a lot of hard work goes into these collections and some weird and wonderful places I have been to get some of those elusive Fodens!

At the moment I have only one picture where the 902 red/green can be seen.
Together with other 502/902's with green wheels.

I have a picture of a red - green 902 with red hubs, is this what you are looking for ? I do not know if it is screwed or riveted.

as well.

Rob, wil je ons af en toe wat tijd gunnen om bij te komen?:)
Rob, will you please allow us some time every now and then to recover from the previous Foden blow?:)

Fantastisch / marvellous, kind regards, Jan

I will do so!!
Kind regards, Rob

Hi all,

Rob's photo shows what they looked like on Christmas morning, here's my version from about August...
Or by the time I got them from my cousins..

Here's my Red / Green, this has to be a back swop I feel, as the real thing should surely have green hubs, or is there a riveted back version with red?

CW.

An other one which is probably unique, the last 905 with Supertoys hubs and the first one with plastic hubs.

Very nice,
One of my friends has one with two axles Supertoy and two axles plastic hubs, proving again that Dinky's quality sytem created a real collector's heaven.
Lucky for us!!

Just one more for the weekend: 503 first en 903 second type in two tone
green. The 903 is in a dual numbered 503/903 box with H. Dobson label and
an original price tag for $ 2,75.

Rob,

Is your friend's Foden with 50 / 50 hubs a chain one or other ?

hoort's picture
hoort

DTCA MemberNetherlands

A chain lorry, as far as I know the chain lorry is the only Foden that has been produced long enough to be able to receive plastic hubs. The production of all other Fodens presumably stopped in 1957. In some catalogues it is mentioned the
903 Tailboard in blue/fawn has been produced until 1960, but I have not seen a
Tailboard box with a later date stamp than 1957. If there is, I stand corrected of course. Dinky Toys have surprised me often enough before!!
