--47y Robot (Two Face - Back to back) (1948-48)

Every now an then some thing truly unusual and rare turns up.

Adrian Nash Member 141 has sent me these pictures of a trade box of two- faced back to back traffic lights:

This box is clearly a post war box, it does not have a 50xxx number however.

It is stated that only the four face traffic signals (robot) were reissued after the war. This does not appear to be the case.

Both two-face signals pre-war shared the same sales number, 47c. Is the use of 47Y an attempt to create a different catalogue number.

I am not aware of this item being listed anywhere else or appearing in the catalogues.

The box contains 10 two faced and one each three and four faced signals.

Two of the two-faced signals are a different shade from the other 8.

They were purchased in 1984 from a dealer in Sydney.

Any more information welcome, I suspect that three and the other two faced signals wee also available briefly post war. I have come across too many in very good shape for them all to be pre-war.

A follow-up, 'Ten Years After', to the late Peter Golden's post here, based on Adrian's post-war trade box. I agree that some of these two-face back-to-back examples are post-war, which is confirmed by the listing in the GBofDT on page 66, where the 47y (as a second version of the -angled- two-face 47c) is mentioned as 'SA Market', 1948-1948. This also goes for 47b, the  three-face version. My two examples of 47y seem to form a couple, as one shows red on both sides and the other green. All my 47a, 47b and 47y's - as shown below - have the base painted white underneath. Indeed, their metal condition also seems too good to be pre-war.

I am no expert on these items, comments welcome. Kind regards, Jan

Another trade box to add to my wants list, always something to find and learn.
