Using the pdf files covering every Dinky Toy prior to starting this new topic, I went in search of the 281 Pathe News Camera Car, and was surprised to find it listed under "Novelty". A check of Ramsay's British Diecast Model Toys Catalogue confirmed this location. Then a check through Dealer Order Forms for 1968 and 1969, Meccano lists this model within the Public Service category that included fire engines, police cars, the RAC and AA Mini Vans, and the Brinks Armoured Car.
Personally, I would have listed the model within the Commercial Vehicles category - but Novelty? No way!
Based on the 172 Fiat 2300 Station Wagon that was also in production throughout the time frame when the Pathe News Car was in production with a number of changes, the most visible being the platform on the roof on which the camera and operator stand.
Returning to its roots, the 281 Pathe News Camera Car was launched in June 1967, and made its appearance in that year's catalogue which unfortunately is undated. Reproduced below is page 40 from the June 1967 issue of the Meccano Magazine that announced its arrival, followed by images from the catalogues for 1967, (1968 is identical to the 1967 catalogue both in page number and price list) and the 1969 catalogue page 11 and the price list. The model was not included in the 1970 catalogue, nor could I locate any price list for 1970 so it can only be assumed that 1970 is correct..
Also included are several stills from a newsreel made in 1967 by Pathe News when the 281 was in full swing production.
And finally, images of my two models, although the box for one is in a sorry state with all its flaps detached thus requiring an extensive period on the operating table to return it to full health! However, you will note that the cameraman has different trousers, one in black and the other in brown. The black trousered example is supposed to be on the endangered list, which is reflected in the prices being achieved for this example.
