A scarce beauty, Rob.
By the way, the only 39 with rounded axle ends.

My humble example:

Hi all,

Thanks for the compliments! A couple of weeks ago this 551 Trailer arrived. Playworn, but an unusual color. I have seen a few of these, but only with ridged hubs, not with Supertoy hubs. Perhaps this color was made for a short period to match and te be used with the yellow 521 Bedford Articulated Lorry.

Kind regards,
Rob

Hi all

Last week my first prewar 39 serie models arrived. Both have thin axles, but the baseplates are different. They are not in the best condition, but for pre war items good enough for me! The Chrysler was a bargain:

Hi Rob,
Makes sense that the yellow trailer may have been sprayed up for an artic lorry, the yellow and orange trailers are still on my wants list, as is the yellow 39 too!
Great new finds.

Nice additions, Rob!
I have been looking out for the yellow Large Trailer for many years already. I'd like to find an excellent example, but that takes some more patience, obviously.

It would be a nice addition to my 'Large Trailer collection'.
Kind regards, Jan

Two months late, but do you have anything more on C & T Auctioneers in Kent?

Anyway, for what it is worth, here is a copy of the Trade Bulletin to Meccano Dealers dated June 1962, with the announcement of the release of the 695 7.2 Howitzer and Tractor Gift Set which will be available from August 1962. A sample of the 695 and the other new releases were also sent out to the Dealers, Order Forms for July, August and September 1962 together with an advice of the closure of the factory on Friday 27th July to Monday 13 August 1962 for the annual holidays. "In order that your supplies may not be delayed, we ask you please to complete and return these Order Forms as quickly as possible."

The above provides us later-day collectors, with details that models were ready and an example with dealers months in advance, and that dealers were given the opportunity to receive their stock of new models in sufficient time when the advertising in the Meccano Magazine and other publications brought little fellows and their Dad's into their nearest dealer's shop!

Kind regards

These dealer bulletins/news sheets are a goldmine of information - I recently bought four of them and will post them soon.

Hi, a bit off-topic: as this time-lag is concerned, this may also accur for different markets and/or catalogues. The no. 581 Horse Box is often stated to have been available from May 1953, the introduction in MM of that month. However, the Dutch catalogue, for example, shows it as being available in October 1952 already, half a year earlier (I don't know what the dealers information says in this case).

Kind regards, Jan

Jan,

Thank you for pointing this fact.

To be accurate, the Horse box was first published on the inside cover of the April 1953 Meccano Magazine.

The first paragraph of the article in the May issue states : "Last month brought us two splendid Dinky Toys, the Ferrari racing car and the Horse Box".

The date of issue is then April 1953 not May.

The date of the Dutch catalogue (October 1952) does not mean that all items published are available at the date of publication. All items will be available some time during the period covered by the catalogue which is often one year but can also be six months for the years when two catalogues were issued each year. This confirms the date of issue as March 1953.

Sorry for the late reply on this, I have only used C & T once and they were absolutely totally professional in every area. I will have no hesitation in using them in the future.

They do have an interesting auction coming up on the 8th April with some nice looking Dinky Toys.

G'Day Jan. Jacques and Dave

Just checked my 1952 UK catalogue, dated September and page 10 has pictures of the aeroplanes in the series which is not the same as the Dutch catalogue.

We then come to the December 1952 (UK) catalogue, a newly re-designed and full colour version with the only exception being the two pages on the recent additions and the forthcoming issues:

With the above page on the right of the recent releases, we now have a page devoted to the forthcoming issues.

533 Released in February 1953
23g Released in March 1953
23h Released in April 1953
23j Released in May 1953
582 Released in May 1953

It is interesting that missing from that list is 581 Horsebox that was also released in April 1953. Although also missing are a number of other models, 752 Goods Yard Crane (February 1953) 30w Electric Articulated Lorry (February 1953) and 27ak Farm Tractor and Hay Rake (March 1953)

Also of interest is the colour scheme/pattern for the 23h Ferrari, as the car was released initially for the first few years with an all yellow nose.

Kind regards

Hi Dave,
Some lovely stuff there mate, the large French commercials & military vehicles are superb, a lot nicer than the UK made ones later on. You even got some pallets with your Bedford! Winner!

The palets ref. 793 were available in red, yellow, turquoise, orange, black or white.

I agree with David, the brown ones are probably repros.

Hi all,

Just unpacked the latest two arrivals. A Rolls Royce in teal blue with smooth hubs and an open chassis. A quite different color than the usual dark blue or saxe blue.
The Rolls is accompanied by a post war Spitfire. I took me quite some time to find a decent one. Love the scale difference!

Kind regards,
Rob

I have just received this #661 (Scammell) Recovery Tractor - the last issue with plastic wheels, plastic driver and winder handle. Note the different style wheels for the centre set. It came in the last issue box that I have not seen before. Bit tatty but acceptable.

Nice one there! These do not come up through auction very often, although the last one that sold through Vectis was on 27 August 2014. That one went for a ridiculous amount of

Richard,

This is a very nice one, it was probably made in Calais. The camouflage net is not so important.

Above is the real AMX 13 F3 exhibited at the Saumur museum and pending restoration.

Do you have any information about when Calais started and stoped making Dinky Toys ?
