New arrivals (cont...)

Three models have arrived, and, while I don't want to say they're my last-ever Dinky Toys (heaven forbid), they're the last to be fitted into my overstuffed display case. I'm afraid models are crammed together like pieces in a jigsaw puzzle.

I only have one other example of this Superior Criterion Ambulance (red side stripes, different colour interior) but fell for this one because to me it's an example of Dinky at its peak. I know many here prefer earlier eras, but for me the early 60s were the best -- mod cons such as steering, suspension, and interiors, plus a few opening parts but not too many. And 1/43 scale or close to it, instead of the huge monstrosities produced later.

The other two additions are Indian "Dinky Toys." I don't collect aircraft in general, but the Milton re-do of the Caravelle is very attractive. And the Mighty Antar is one of the more elusive Nicky Toys. It comes without the (French-sourced) transformer that the Binns Road original had.

Jonathan---Some very nice additions once again! I have never dabbled with the Indian Nicky Toys, so interesting to see some. The Caravelle does look quite nice in those colors. The Mighty Antarctic looks almost like the original but for the trailer portion, which appears to be a white color.....is that correct? Looks to be in nice condition.
Regarding display space-----quite some time ago I exceeded my maximum space, after squeezing in a few more shelves, and then crowding the models, so they are barely 1/8-1/4" apart. So I decided I needed to remove some items, and focus on what was important to me. Some newer ones have to be content to staying in their boxes in cupboards. I have recently made the decision to not buy anymore, and be content with managing, photographing, and writing about what I have. Very nice!
Best regards, Terry

Terry, thanks for your kind comments as always. I would love to see your collection!

You are right -- the trailer on the Indian Antar is lighter than the one from Liverpool -- more a grayish white than a gray. I am surprised the color is as close to the Liverpool product as it is, since most of the Nicky Toys are different colors from the originals.

I just have 10 or 12 Nickys. They are poor quality, but nonetheless fascinating.

Hi Jonathan, these are interesting additions. Indeed, they are poor products generally, but in terms of the history of Dinky Toys they belong to the story. I have been hesitating many times to buy such a Nicky Toy, but I never did. The Caravelle, for instance. It was - or is - on sale on the QDT site recently - and for a very fair price, contrary to other items there. It would make my 'Caravelle story' more complete. I have never had this model in hands. It looks so plump on pictures. Is it really the same die it was made from? Looking at the wings and some other details I doubt it, or the die must have been considerably changed. Thanks for showing and kind regards, Jan

Jan,

Indeed, QDT is where I purchased the Caravelle. As you noticed, they claimed this to be from the Dinky tooling, but it may not be. It is known that Milton issued other Dinky lookalikes that were just copies. Alas, I do not have an original Dinky Caravelle to compare side by side.

As for the Nickys, of course it is well-known that they came from the Meccano tooling.

I am lucky to have various Indian Dinkies but also a couple South African models and one Chilean race car. Wish I had more!

Cheers,

Jonathan

Thanks, Jonathan, this confirms my thoughts and justifies my hesitation. Nevertheless, something special and a happy addition for you! Kind regards, Jan

Jan,

Indeed further study of Jacques' Encyclopaedia confirms that the Caravelle does not come from the Dinky tooling, because its size is wrong. I must admit, though, that I was still fooled until I measured, because whoever created the Milton tooling obviously copied the Dinky in pretty much every respect. (Oddly, it looks as though the fold-down staircase at the rear was originally copied, but then rivetted shut.)

Here are some pictures of the Dinky and then of the Milton.

As you may spot, a curious feature of the Milton casting is the traces of circles on the top and bottom of the wings, perhaps intended to help locate roundels on some sort of fictional military version.

In any case, I don't regret getting the Milton -- it is an interesting rarity, and a nice companion for the two other Miltons I have (luxury coaches that are a close copy of the Dinky 29g).

So interesting that they made a similar, but different casting, and I agree well worthwhile to add to your collection.....it is part of "the story".

Thought you might like to tsee the differences in size between the Dinky Toys Caravelle and the Milton Toys one.  Incidentally, the passenger door on the Milton door is simply a decal, not part of the casting.

Greetings from Australia

Having seen countless "new arrivals" in this Topic in recent months while I have been absent from the site, on 17 January, a parcel arrived in my post office box from an auction house in the west of England, that yielded five early post-war Dinky toys. This has not been the only parcel to arrive recently, but the models are the nicest ones to come my way in recent months and thus are very deserving to be displayed in this Topic.

27f Estate Car, the first issue without the sales number on the base plate, an ideal candidate to replace mine that was lost while I was living in Papua New Guinea which had been given to me for Christmas 1951. It was this model and the Vanguard that held my deep interest; the others were simply a “bonus”!

40a Riley Saloon in dark green with black ridged hubs, very similar to one my brother once owned in the early 1950s,

40e Standard Vanguard, 1st casting with open rear wheel arches, with the rear axle secured by a tinplate clip, fawn body with extremely uncommon red ridged hubs, to go with my similar model with the regular fawn hubs,

139a Ford Fordor Sedan, plain roof interior without “Ford Sedan”, in yellow with yellow ridged hubs, base plate with small letters, and,

139b Hudson Commodore, plain interior roof, light cream in a matte finish, with gloss dark maroon, almost dark brown roof and window frames and ridged hubs, small base plate letters with no model number.

Two models are very, very near mint (40a and139b) to very, very slightly chipped (27f) to slightly chipped, (40e and 139a) with the cost  delivered to our post office box extremely satisfying. Checking out smaller venues rather than relying on major or well-known auction houses does pay dividends.

Beautiful items Bruce, in very good conditions.

Congratulations

For me today, arrived a Mercedes Benz 300 SE in metallic blue : it's the first version with smooth area under the bonnet and only the letter "A" and the last version of the duple roadmaster Leyland Royal tiger ref.282.

Kind regards

Richard

Hi all, quite some fascinating new additions above, well done!

Ron, thanks for the identification of the Milton Toys Caravelle as not being produced from the old Dinky moulds. This qualification of QDT could not make sense, and now you show in comparison that the difference is very obvious. I hesitated to buy it, but, as demonstrated now, with a reason. Still a desirable object , but not fitting into an overview of Dinky Toys history.

Bruce, the Estate Car is one of my firm favourites too and I can vividly imagine that you were looking out for a replacement. And a beauty it is!

I scored some fine acquistions too. Earlier this month I came across a beautiful first issue no. 38c Lagonda Coupe, with the smooth hubs, 'closed' steering wheel and original white early post-war tyres as a bonus. Some chipping, but the paint looks very clean and bright, with an 'as new' patina. In this appearance together with the no. 153a Jeep the first post-war Dinky Toys issue - both with the smooth hubs and closed steering wheel.

Just arrived from Thailand I brought two nice French Dinky Toys with me yesterday. Bought from a French Dinky collector over there, whom I got acquaintance with via the internet. It was very nice to meet in person and we had a very interesting and matey Dinky afternoon at his home in Bangkok. The prize consists of a blue/cream French Dinky Toys no. 29f Autocar Chausson, a companion to my previous red one, and an all light grey no. 24x Ford 'Vedette 54'. Lovely items in excellent condition and boxed. Kind regards, Jan

Wow----so many nice, new items from all of you! Bruce, all of your new ones are so nice and desirable, street from the heart of the Golden Years of Dinky production. I well remember instantly liking that Estate Car the first time I saw one. "Woodies" are still very popular here in the states, and widely admired.
And Jan, what nice acquisitions....the Lagonda is just lovely, and an early one with smooth wheels and white tires looks lovely. Sounds like you also had an enjoyable trip....welcome back!
Best regards, Terry

Jan and Terry – a little belated, in fact very belated but many thanks for your comments on my Estate Car. Yes, it is a beauty which has now replaced its earlier replacement for my lost Estate Car. That earlier replacement had 27f on its base plate. The fact that later day investigation reveals the model not to be an exact replica of the original is of little concern! I was like you Terry – absolutely thrilled on receiving my original example for Christmas 1950 which allowed me to have my own Estate Car and for my brother to keep his!

As for your new acquisitions Jan, what else can one say but they are superb, especially that lovely 38c Lagonda. It is incredible what is actually out there insofar as Dinky Toys are concerned especially those that have survived virtually unscathed over countless decades. The two French models you acquired from the collector in Thailand is an unexpected country to find Dinky Toys!

Kind regards to you both

This thread is a horrible influence, bearing in mind that I really have no more space for Dinky Toys!

Fortunately for my wallet at least, I enjoy even the models from the non-Golden years! These three arrived yesterday: I was pleased to get the late Bedford Refuse Wagon, because it's still pretty nice for late production, and because it's in the lime green colour that I've been told was used by Liverpool (can any readers confirm?). As such it completes my "Liverpool" collection, since I have the lime green version of the earlier Bedford Refuse Wagon and of the Ford D800 street sweeper (though I still want that one in the last, one-year only "facelift" version).

The Modellers World version of the 410 had eluded me previously, so it adds to my fleet of those vans. And the 293 Atlantean, though a little less than mint and with a tatty box, was keenly priced. Much to my surprise, I only had the "Regent" version before.

Finally also yesterday, this shop display case arrived as the result of a successful eBay bid. I'll have to figure out where to put it and what models should go inside. The header card was crafted by the seller; I have an original on another display case and will have to figure out how to make a reasonable fascimile (it's larger than 8 1/2 x 11 or A4 size, so a computer printer won't work).

Two fine new additions these days, one Liverpool product, one Bobigny's:

No. 6 Shepherd Set, the final edition 1952-1956, this one quality control stamped 26 2 52.

And:

No. 38a Camion Unic multibenne Marrel, in the lighter (1957-1958) yellow/lemon finish, issue with convex hubs in front and early attachment of the container. This one completes my pre-1960s Unic issues: 38a, 39a Unic Saharien and 39b Unic Porte-voitures. Kind regards, Jan

Very nice Jan.

Just one missing : the Unic antargaz

More difficult to find.

Good luck.

Hi Richard, thanks for your comment! Fortunately that difficult-to-find 'antargaz' (or is it 'Primagaz'?) is not on my wishlist as it is too young, post-1965, new number only, with too much plastic. This may sound very strict, but this limitation helps me perfectly keeping control over the collection (and my financeswink). Kind regards, Jan

Discovered lurking in my post office box was this 153a Jeep, the hard-to-find first casting of this model. Forgot to give it a little clean before going into the photo studio, so please excuse the dust of countless civilisations!

A very accurate casting, although the tinplate windscreen surround is a little too high. Still, it is a nice effort from Meccano.

This completes my 153A collection.

Finally I have just added an image of the Willys Jeep I acquired for my War Branch of the National Museum, donated by a Port Moresby pharmacist, Bill Chapman.

Bruce---That's a very nice first version of the Jeep, with smooth wheels and the solid steering wheel. The paint appears to be in great condition.....very nice find!
That little Jeep was one of my first 5 Dinky's, for Christmas in 1951, and I have always loved it, along with the Reconnaissance Car....both superb castings with lots of detail, and very accurate models as well. The early version, with the flat hood or bonnet, is much nicer; the later casting with that "domed" hood just doesn't look quite right to me.
Best regards, Terry

Nice Jeep Bruce, specially the scale 1

Friendly yours

Thank you fellows for your nice comments.  I think the first casting was the best with the flat bonnet, although the second casting that retains the flat bonnet but has the open steering wheel does really take the cake!

I was very surprised with the outcome of the sale, thirty quid plus extras!  Same price a similar model sold earlier last year, and yet ten years ago, the price was in the region of more than double what i paid.

But I intend giving the little chap a nice bath and warm dry-down and cannot wait to see the result!

Kind regards to you all

Three new items arrived, two from the very last year of Dinky.

The 449 Road Sweeper has the retooled front, which was available both painted in silver and in (what I believe was) the more accurate black, as shown here.

The 289 Routemaster with the "Yellow Pages" advert (obviously recycled from the Leyland Atlantean) was only available in limited quantities in the United States in 1989, according to Keith Harvie, whose opinion I value.

The 989 Auto Transporter has obviously seen better days but is the only one I've ever been able to own (though I have the Dan Toys replica). Lucky for me, it was listed on eBay as being the #984, and I was able to purchase it for just $55. Now, I need to find a replacement tyre!

Always nice to some new acquisitions, and two from the very last year of production are very interesting, and ones I am not familiar with. I've heard that 989 Transporter is difficult to find, so nice going!
