--52/52a/52b Cunard - White Star Liner "Queen Mary" (1934-1949)

Hello all,

I have some puzzles regarding the Dinky model of R.M.S Queen Mary.

This one is no problem, it is the 2nd casting (‘534’ + Queen Mary underneath) in the first box. I need not show the interior card support, because it just isn’t there.

But this one is far from clear to me.

It has brass rollers, which are said to be post-war (the underside of the 2nd casting example shown as well).

But the inside of the box with this model shows the indication ‘150 varieties’ which cannot be later than ca. 1936. What is wrong here: is my dating of the box (150 varieties) incorrect? Is my dating of the model (brass rollers) incorrect? Or do box and model not match and have they probably been combined much later?

And what is the dating of this model and/or box then:

Straight model without fatigue, Eiffeltower comparison in the lid’s inside, nice panorama on the box’s internal cardboard and ‘R.M.S. Queen Mary’ below the model’s display only. As far as I am aware I have not seen this mentioned in Nelson Twells’ section in DT&MM. Is this the ‘presentation box’ as mentioned in the July 1936 catalogue, or is any of these QM boxes considered to be a presentation box? Or the post-war appearance?

And finally this mysterious one (for me, that is). It seems to have roller axles protruding through the model sides. I have seen no reference to that, do others?

I hope somebody can help me with the dating and/or explaining of the items shown!

Kind regards, Jan Werner

Hello Jan,
Well your first box has no insert card, my box 534 no 52 (black number 52), does. It is a shiny blue insert with 150 varieties. The model is without rollers. 534 Queen Mary, casting inside is smooth.
My second blue box is a Queen Mary No 52 (red number 52),shiny blue insert 150 varieties. The model is without rollers. The casting shows holes for the axels but the holes are filled in. It is possible Meccano decided first to make holes and crimping the axels at the inside. The method of tinplate frame with rollers is of course cheaper to produce and I think the holes were filled in. In my collection are more models with filled in castings. The casting inside shows small pillars at the spot the holes were previously. Marked 534 Queen Mary. Maybe your model with holes is a rare one.
My third type box has the pictorial insert. Label Red number 52A Queen Mary. Model 534 Queen Mary, inside with pillars and rollers. My other pre war boxes, pump sets etc. pictorial inserts start with 200 varieties. So I thinks these were produced after the types with plain shiny inserts. Is there someone who has the drawing of the ship? John.
Will send you also a message in Dutch.

Thanks John, although not every problem has been solved now, this was the kind of anwer I was hoping for. Perhaps others could check their Queen Mary models: castings, boxes, lettering, numbers, inserts etc. in order to get things clear, for post-war models as well.

And yes, the drawing ... how I would love to see it, in fact two versions:

Job no. 7260, Liner ‘Queen Mary’ Mounted on Wheels, side + underneath elevs. (assy) d.d. 01-10-1935, final change 01-07-1939 (‘534’ deleted).
Job no. 7260, Queen Mary colour scheme drawing (handpainting & masking) (assy) d.d. 29-05-1947, signed G.W.

The latter was sold in a Christie's South Kensington auction of September 1995.

Kind regards, Jan Werner
