Meccano made a colored version of the Junkers Ju 90 with name Giant High Speed Monoplane. Known are 5 main colors, light blue, medium blue, yellow, green and red. The trim on wingflaps, tail and fuselage can be very different. In my collection 4 blue models, all with different trim.
The model was introduced in Meccano Magazine February 1939 and was sold in yellow tradeboxes of six models. Not clear if just one color was in a tradebox or different colors. As sales ended late 1940, the models are not common. Registration of these planes is D-AZBK. All models in my collection have a gliding hole. Prop pins can be spherial or disk type.
Unfortunately the drawing of this model never showed up. From die of first model 62n Junkers Ju 90, model 62y was made by changeable insert with new name Giant High Speed Monoplane. Probably the insert Ju 90 was lost during war and the re-introduced silver 62n had the name Giant High Speed Monoplane also however with registration G-ATBK.
John.
Very spectacular, John, to see so many colour variants of a rare model and even of one basic colour only. And in such a wonderful condition. I wonder what made the factory decide to change such a minor, unsignificant colour detail so frequently. I bet you have many more variants of other colours in your collection!
On copying the registration number G-AZBK and see what the internet answered, I discovered that you made a little typing error, it should be D-AZBK. G-AZBK produced a modern Piper aircraft. Thanks for your interesting post, kind regards, Jan
Hello Jan,
Thanks a lot for your answer. I changed the registation to D-AZBK, was indeed a error.
Regards John.
I cannot by far equal (late) John Beugels' knowledge and models, but, having found a nice example of a post-war Giant High Speed Monoplane, I dare to post some more text and photos relating to this Dinky Toys aeroplane.
The Giant High Speed Monoplane is the anonymous version of the previously issued Junkers Ju 90 Air Liner, no. 62n, introduced in 1938. Numbered 62y the Giant High Speed Monoplane, cast from the same die, followed in 1939. After a hiatus from 1941 to 1945, the latter was reissued after the war, in 1945, but the original Junkers Ju 90 model was definitely discontinued. Until 1940 both versions had a gliding game hole. The reissue never showed that hole anymore, just a tiny square remnant inside.
The differences between both versions are:
62n:
Two different (actual) registration numbers: D-AURE (‘Bayern’) and D-AIVI (‘Preussen’).
Packed in an individual blue lid box (A2246).
Usually (until 1940) equipped with a gliding game hole.
Silver-coloured only.
Cabin windows and doors represented by means of transfers.
Cast below starboard wing: JUNKERS AIR LINER | J.U.90 (or: J.U.9.0 since the arrival of 62y in 1939).
62y:
Two different (non-existent) registration numbers: D-AZBK (pre) and G-ATBK (post war).
Trade box, yellow, for 6 models.
Usually (from 1940) without a gliding game hole, the square remnant is visible inside, underneath.
Available in various different colours (including silver), each with different trailing edges of the wings.
No cabin windows or doors shown.
Cast below starboard wing: GIANT HIGH SPEED | MONOPLANE.
Like all Dinky Toys aeroplanes the Giant High Speed Monoplane was deleted in 1949. However, some aircraft models were re-issued in 1952. A catalogue page below, featuring all 18 models still available early 1947. The Job List Index marks all 20 aeroplanes struck out in 1949, the relatively new 1947 introductions, Shooting Star and Shetland Flying Boat, included. Kind regards, Jan
