--28m Delivery Van 'Wakefield's Castrol' (1934-41)

This is my 28m Type 1 (=1st cast) pre-war Wakefield’s Castrol Oil Van. It was part of the 2nd run of 6 earliest Delivery Vans and belonged to Meccano Dinky Toys series No. 28/2 Delivery Vans, but there is much more to say about the appearance of this model of which I already show here a picture.

Dinky Toys 28m Wakefield's Castrol Motor OIl Delivery Van.

When we are talking about the pre-war Dinky Toys series No. 28/1 and 28/2  type 1 Delivery Vans you also have more to know about the origin of this type Delivery Van. I will try to explain this in a brief overview.

In MM of December 1933, the new Hornby Series Modelled Miniatures Set No. 22 of six motor vehicles was announced, sold as a set for 4/-.  The (first) Delivery Van 22d was one of these motor vehicles, sold separate for 8d.

In this MM about the introduction and promotion of this Hornby Series Modelled Miniatures was a short description about the appearance of the Delivery Van. This was the beginning of the history and the life of “the Delivery Van”.

In MM of April 1934, the Delivery Van was for the first time called as Dinky Toys 22d  and costed 8d.

Hornby Series 22d Delivery Van.

This is a picture of the intended Delivery Van of the Hornby Series Modelled Miniatures and received in April 1934 the Dinky Toys model number 22d.

The No. 28/1 and 28/2 Type 1 Delivery Vans are directly derived from this Hornby Series Modelled Miniatures Delivery Van, later called Dinky Toys 22d, which was part of the Hornby Series No. 22 with six Motor Vehicles.

The cast of 28/1 and 28/2 Type 1 Delivery Vans is even like the 22d made of a lead alloy that is not sensitive to fatigue. The 22d and 28m cast is based on the Modelled Miniatures 22c Motor Truck (photo hereunder) by swap the open loading platform for an enclosed Van back and merge the 2 parts together by a tin plate clip in a slot in the roof of the car. It has metal thin colour washed disc wheels and weighs 117 grams.

Because I am also a collector of Meccano and Dinky Toys catalogues, I like to show you how the earliest Delivery Vans of No. 28/1 and 28/2 in the beginning in chronological order appeared in the various catalogues and MM publications.

MM April 1934: The 1st series of 6 Delivery Vans No. 28/1 appeared and the Vans had only a model name, no model number.

MM May 1934: The 2nd series of 6 Delivery Vans No. 28/2, including "Wakefield's Oil Van" appeared a month later and the Vans still only had a model name, no model number.

MM June 1934: Price of complete set of No. 28/1 or 28/2 reduced from 4/- to 3/- and separate model from 9d to 6d.

MM July 1934: No. 28/1 together with 28/2 appeared for the 1st time with pictures of all Vans, without model numbers.

MM August 1934: Just now all Delivery Vans got a model number and "Wakefield's Oil Van" got number 28m. 28m was part of serie 28/2. Note: In August 1935, the name of model 28m (then type 2 cast) in the catalogues changed to "Wakefield's Castrol Oil Van". Meccano Liverpool was not very consistent in model naming.

August 1934: Meccano catalogue UK 1934 with series No. 28/1 and 28/2 with model name and numbers.

August 1934: Meccano catalogue Dutch 1934 with only series No. 28/1 and without model names and numbers.

MM September 1934: series No. 28/1 and 28/2 Delivery Vans appeared for the 1st time with pictures of all the Vans, now complete with name and model number

September 1934: Hornby Book of Trains 1934-5 with series No. 28/1 and 28/2 in colour.

October 1934: Meccano Book UK 1934-5 with series No. 28/1 and 28/2 in colour.

As told, 28m was part of a series of 12 Delivery Vans, divided into 2 x 6 Vans with advertising print on the body side of the Vans. Because Meccano Liverpool delivered Dinky Toys into six pack trade boxes, there were 2 series Delivery Vans. No. 28/1 with 28a through 28f and No. 28/2 with 28g through 22d. All are called (cast) Type 1 Delivery Vans, because after that another series of Delivery Vans Type 2 and Type 3 appeared with another casting till 1941, but they retained their model number when changing cast.

Note: 22d Delivery Van was included in the Hornby Modelled Miniatures / Dinky Toys Series No. 22 Motor Vehicles (without advertising) as well in the series No. 28/2 Delivery Vans as 22d Meccano Engineering for Boys (with advertising).

Below is shown in Ramsay's British Diecast Model Toys Catalogue 15th edition how the cast of 3 types of Delivery Vans can be identified, with photos and description.

There exist series 28 Type 1 Delivery Vans with cast wheels and rubber tyres, instead of metal disc wheels, with Hornby Series or Meccano Dinky Toys cast-in. I show pictures of both. These Vans are extremely scarce.

Serie 28/1 Type 1 was issued from April 1934 - August 1935.

Serie 28/2 Type 1 with 28m Wakefield Castrol Motor Oil appeared a month later from May 1934 - August 1935. Model 28m was issued in all 3 types cast until 1941.

Wikipedia:

Castrol is a British global brand of industrial and automotive lubricants offering a wide range of oils, greases and similar products for most lubrication applications.

The Wakefield Oil Company was founded by Charles Cheers Wakefield in 1899. The brand “Castrol” originated after researchers added castor oil to their lubricant formulations. In 1966, Castrol was acquired by Scottish company Burmah Oil, which was renamed Burmah-Castrol. Burmah-Castrol was purchased by London-based multinational BP in 2000.

I wanted to buy a Delivery Van from the Series 28 Type 1 with advertising print of an existing brand or company. Castrol is a brand and Wakefield is a company that still exists. (Perhaps is this the only brand name or company of all Delivery Vans that still exists ???) That's why I bought these Dinky Toys 28m Wakefield Castrol Motor Oil Delivery Van years ago, of which I show pictures here.

Jan,

Many thanks for this splendid contribution on pre-war Dinky 28/1 vans. I wonder how many were sold in the Netherlands. I have never seen a "Dutch tradebox 28" despite the models were in a few catalogues for Netherlands market. Most shops in the Netherlands put a stamp or sticker on the (trade) boxes as a kind of advertising. I have some in my collection and of course these are very special as original sold in our country. So we have to wait until a 28 box turnes up one day.

John.
