-176 Austin A105 Saloon (1958-63)

Browsing the internet I came across a drawing of Dinky Toys 176 Austin A105 saloon. Sold for £ 40.00 by QDT in 2010. Lucky Guy.

Hi Jan, a nice discovery that is. A pity that so many drawings are still wandering around, whereas we do not know their exact contents. This one is hardly readable too.

Perhaps this is a nice place to post the base plate's drawing (job no. 20126) for the never produced Austin A105 Westminster Countryman (apparently with the 'complete' job no. 20124). It is in my possession but the image and contents must be familiar to all, as everone knows its picture in the GBofDT, page 212, but not the full image. I am very careful with it, but I hope nevertheless that one day it will find a good permanent home. Kind regards, Jan

Jan. It is very interesting to see such an unexecuted Meccano drawing, dated 15-10-1957, in its entirety and to philosophize about it.

If I correct read the drawing, this model should have been given the number 155, which was later taken over by the Ford Anglia in July 1961. The not issued 155 Austin Westminster Countryman, of which I show a photo impression, was eventually replaced by the 199 Austin 7 countryman in May 1961.

Strange that the number 155 was not issued to the Austin 7 countryman, who was released in May 1961 a little earlier than the 155 Ford Anglia in July 1961.

Hello Jan,

Here is my drawing of the Austin 105 - Complete, a similar drawing as the one sold by QDT. I bought it from a dealer around 20 years ago. He had more drawings, but I could choose one. This one was the only one showing a complete model and this model  is the first Dinky Toy with windows. Made my choice easier. It is on transparant paper and in very good condition. I had it framed, but in such a way that it can be unframed easily.

Kind regards,

Rob

That is very nice, Rob, I hope to behold it on a future occasion! May be no 'significant changes' there, as the GBofDT lists, but certainly much more than nothing. This drawing must have been a part of lot no. 324 of the Christie's auction of the property of Mike & Sue Richardson, on 26 October 2000 (lot no. 353 was for lucky me). Kind regards, Jan

I always find it interesting to find out the model year of the prototype. The Meccano assembly drawing of the Austin A105 Job No 14846 is dated 8-1-56, the Body Job No 14847 and Base Job No 14848 are both dated 21-12-56, but the final model 176 is not based on model year 1956, but 1957, as can be seen from the accompanying brochures. The 1957 model was launched October 1956 and introduced at the Earls Court London Motor Show from 17-27 October 1956.

1956 Austin A105 Saloon brochure

1957 Austin A105 Saloon brochure

Below I show pictures of a real 1957 Austin A105 in a very nice two-tone colour scheme. It has the Austin badge and the typical Austin ornament on the air intake on the bonnet top with five ribs, from distance immediately recognizable as an Austin. It is the prototype of the Dinky Toys 176.

Recently I received my 176 Austin A105 saloon with its 1st version dual picture box with almost invisible beige color spot on both end flaps. It has the 1st colour scheme as depicted in the introduction-advertisement of MM April 1958: Cream body with light blue flash line and cream ridged hubs. There may be differences in the shade of colour. Later issues got a dual-tone colour scheme with the roof coloured as the flash line. Last issues were released with spun hubs. It is the first Dinky Toys car with windows, 2 years after Corgi Toys, the origin of "The ones with windows". In competition with other toy brands, Meccano Liverpool had to make its models more attractive. From now on, more new applications are being developed, which are listed in a frame on the box.

If I compare the model with the real one, Meccano Liverpool has reproduced the model correctly. All curves in the body have been accurately incorporated into the model, even the badge and the five ribs of the air intake of the bonnet ornament have been accurately reproduced and the visible walk-through Flash line goes down on the body of the rear doors. Even the 3 decorative boxes on the front and 2 decorative boxes on the back of the flash lines have been copied. If you look closely at the model you will discover all these nice details. In my opinion a very nice Job done by Meccano Liverpool. Many Austin models were made by Meccano Liverpool. It is a pity that this affordable British car brand, as one of the many, has disappeared from the market.
