Meccano Magazine

The Meccano Magazine was the in-house publication of Meccano Ltd and ran from the 1920s up until the 1970s.

It contained features about new technology, new industrial developments, transport news, engineering news, new innovations, new Dinky Toys, Hornby, Hornby Dublo, Meccano and Bayco.

I have a full set from January 1934 to February 1964 some 276 editions. Some of the cover illustrations are absolutely stunning and I will post a number of these over the next few weeks.

When I was a young 'Dinky Toys' boy in the late 1950s and early 1960s I used to eagerly await the arrival of my Meccano Magazine each month.

Here is the front cover from August 1951 showing a Gloster Meteor in a power dive.

Hi Dave, very nice!
But do you know this one?

http://www.meccanoindex.co.uk/

It's all there!
Incredible, all covers, all contents, all subjects, cross-referenced etc.
Really impressive search tool for everything Meccano, Dinky etc.
Kind regards, Jan

Here is a pre-war one from February 1935. At this time the magazine was A4 size and very impressive, during the war it became A5 due to the restrictions on paper.

A lovely cover from the December 1951 Meccano Magazine.

This evokes memories of a bygone age - not a digital device in sight!!!

The covers with a Dinky Toys or ships relation are my favourites:

Another nice MM cover of April 1939, just a few months before WWII broke out.
It shows the Junkers JU-90 Air Liner, Dinky Toys no. 62n preparing for a night flight.

Not just the covers but also the contents were so well done with very thorough and informative columns
like this one. They give excellent impressions of the era and the rapid technichal progress in everything
automotive.

In this issue the column includes information about and a picture of the new Flying Fortress, Dinky Toys
no. 62g.

And here it is, as issued in the first month of the war.

And on page 252 is the main article on the Junkers.

And here it is, sitting on the cover of a well-known Diecast Toy Aircraft book, as introduced in 1938 already!

One of my big favourites is this impressive cover of the October 1961 issue of MM. In the mean time the Magazine had resumed the large size that it had pre war, which makes this picture even more stunning (of course not reproducible that way on this spot).

The Queen Mary was so iconic and had such a long life (in fact still in existence) that it regularly showed up in the Magazine for almost thirty years. A selection:

Jan--
What a wonderful cover and also the inside contents tell all about the Queen Mary and her development. Very interesting and a remarkable ship in her day. By the way, the Queen Mary is now permanently anchored in nearby Long Beach, California and is open for tours, etc. She has been there for about 30 years I believe and is still an impressive sight to behold.

Of some issues of Meccano Magazine I have two versions, showing different prices, like this one:

What is the reason?

I am pretty sure I know the answer to this one Jan.

Before they moved over to the Aus Dollar and NZ Dollar both Australia and New Zealand had the Pound as their currency.

It was never an exchange rate of 1:1, I am sure that the magazine priced at 9 pence was for UK market and the one priced at 1 shilling was for Australia and New Zealand markets.

Dave

I found your Post while laboriously going through The Forum and copying every Post I have made and in the process, have found that many of my Posts have been prematurely terminated or missing completely.  I used primarily, under My Account, all the Forum Topics in which I have posted an entry.  I then came to realize that this table was atrociously incomplete.  I first noticed this when my personal Post Number at the foot of my messages and after my name and DTCA member number had many gaps. (Yes, that was the reason I started including this in the last six or so months of the life of the old website.)

I understand from Al, that in time, everything will be sorted out from the old site, but I could not wait, just in case this new site gets hacked and really buggered - at least I have a copy of all my "hard" work!!

Anyway, in the course of this, I saw the above Post from you, and I thought I would reply - be it a little over THREE years ago when your posted your entry!

You are spot on with your response. The 9d was the price in the UK with the other most likely Australia.  I must go through all my stuff and see if the magazine's price appears elsewhere.

Kind regards
