--23s and 222 Streamlined Racing Car (1938-56)

A nice dark blue no. 23s Streamlined Racing Car raced in from Guernsey the other day, the anonymous brother of nr. 23m 'Thunderbolt' Speed Car. Pre-war it had many but silver colours, post-war also many colours but especially silver, because the coloured ones (with black hubs)  lasted until about 1949 only, whereas the silver one (with black and later cream hubs) survived as no. 222 until 1956, always packed in trade boxes of four.

All coloured versions were fantasy of course (like so many post-war coloured aeroplanes, previously more realistic pre-war issues), as there was only one original Thunderbolt, in silver.

Kind regards, Jan

Jan, I have that same dark blue 23S, but mine is a very early postwar version, with silvered baseplate, and white tires. Unfortunately, it was given to me many years ago, and quite scratched up, so I will not bother showing a photo of it. I also have a later 222, in silver, with light blue trim, that I bought new around 1956. But like you observed, the only real correct one is the pre-war 23M, in silver, with black trim and the Union Jack on the tailfin.
Regards, Terry

Greetings Jan and Terry

I recently obtained a Streamlined Racing Car (aka Thunderbolt) in the same colour scheme as described by Terry, but I would like to share it with The Group!  I have not bothered collecting these for some reason, but when this and several others came up, I put in a low bid and won them. So now I have them.  The others are another 23s/222 and a post-war 23p.

I am glad to have found this Topic as I wanted to know the exact vintage of my Streamlined Racing Car with its silvered base plate and white tyres.  The ridged hubs of course denote post-war, so I presume this model was the first post-war issue. This perhaps can also be confirmed with the rivets as these are more typical of pre-war than post-war, although I am open to disagreement! In my opinion, this model would date from 1947 or thereabouts.

However, I went in search of the appearance of the 23s in any price list or catalogue, and I was surprised to see its first appearance in a catalogue was in 1952, March for the Australian edition and August for the September UK edition.  There may have been earlier catalogues, but the UK catalogue 13/1050/80 did not include the 23s which did make an appearance in the September 1952 price list 13/952/250. Then something odd happened - the 23s does not appear in the August 1952 colour catalogue, Australian edition, nor the May 1952 UK edition (13/552/130) so what is going on? Perhaps being a pre-war casting, the model was made but never given any prominence simply due to it being an old casting.

With the various "Meccano Toys of Quality" catalogues, the first mention of the 23s was in the September 1952 issue with a print code of 16/852/500, and then it was not included in the February 1953 catalogue (16/153/50) but then it pops up again in the October 1953 catalogue (13/1053/350). Then in June 1954 the 23s becomes 222, the catalogue print code being 13/654/50. The last appearance in a "Meccano Toys of Quality" catalogue is in the July 1956 issue, print code 13/756/50. Its last appearance in a Dinky Toys price leaflet was that of July 1956 (16/656/200 2p).  These dates may change should other members have later price list issues.

Cecil Gibson in his book states January 1948 was its first postwar appearance, so it can only be presumed that the model was in production from 1948 until mid-1956 but only in an adhoc fashion which did not warrant it appearing in every price list and catalogue until 1952 to 1954 then it made infrequent appearances but mainly in the "Meccano Toys of Quality" catalogues.

May the discussion continue!

Kind regards

Hi Bruce, remarkable example of the Streamlined Racing Car you have found. Without doubt it is post-war and one of the very first with ridged hubs. In this period the silver base plates are not common but they occur every now and then in my opinion. The rivet heads, with their tiny dimples, are slightly different from the smooth pre-war items. Later on these heads are flatter with slightly larger dimples, as far as I can observe. I have shown three examples below. I even suspect the light green one with white tyres to have a black  overpainted silver base plate, and to be a near contemporary of yours.

The Streamlined Racing Car belonged to the first post-war re-issues to be discontinued in 1948/49 (see the list below). On the other hand it belonged to a minority that was re-re-issued in June 1952, as Meccano Magazine of that month confirms. Still I believe that their must have been a differentiation in availability on various markets. The 1947/48 USA catalogue/leaflet underlines its availability in that era. Post-1952 the availability must have been abundant and wide spread, in order to meet growing later post-war demand in the early 1950s. Kind regards, Jan

Bruce---You are quite right...yours is almost identical to mine, but even though yours is a bit worn, it is still better than mine! Someone gave it to me years ago, and I would not have kept it, except for being so early postwar. In that regard, mine must be slightly older, earlier than yours, as I did just look at it, and it does have the smooth, black wheels with no ridge. Otherwise, it has that same silver baseplate and white tires. But you are now onboard with this famous record car that had a quite long run with Dinky......very nice!
Best regards, Terry

A colour scheme that I was not much aware of below, the front intake and side exhausts picked out only, in dark green. Lacking the coloured intake details on top it comes closest to the scheme of no. 23m Thunderbolt Racing Car, albeit in black (in the background).

A comparison below of the dark blue and the darker blue examples of the Streamlined Racing Car. Which one should one call 'navy blue'? The darker blue one, nearing to black, is similar to Bruce's example above, but for the difference that the hubs are smooth and the white tyres are treaded, obviously an early example of the 1945-1946 period. Kind regards, Jan.
