While posting a comment on the 641 Army 1-Ton Cargo Truck, and delving through some very old images I had made more than a decade ago, I discovered an image i took of two Armoured Car boxes. In my post for the 641 Army 1-Ton Cargo Truck, I had this to say:

"Although this thread last had a post nearly five years ago, thought I would add something with the model's boxes. The yellow box without a drawing of the model (the plain box) had a smaller font for the black lettering on the English end flap and there is no hyphen between 1 and Ton. Also, the shape of the black oval with the white sales number is "flatter", or not as oval as the one on the end-flap of the pictorial box."

One can see with the image below, the 670 also had a similar style for its end flap with the plain yellow box version. My question however, is what was blacked out with the box on the right?

By the way, the price written on the plain box, 3/7, was current from the date the model was launched in September 1954 until March 1955. No other period had the same price for this model. The thought comes to mind that the model was first released without a drawing of the model which may have also been the case with the 641.

Hi Bruce,

Interesting to see the different boxes and to find out what was blacked out! I can't help you as I don not have many military Dinky Toys in my collection. I hope someone else has the answer!

The black stripe hides "STAGHOUND" which is a similar armoured car to the Daimler, it was made by Chevrolet.

This must be an error from one who thought he knew. This must be the earliest type of box and as at Binns road nothing was ever thrown away, these boxes were used. They were not made to last any further than when the kid got home from the toy shop and tore the box away if he had not done that already in the street leaving the box in some gutter.

By the way, if you want your pictures to show in the center of the page, it is very easy :

Thanks for the guidance Jacques, although I had a terrible time trying to do likewise, until I realised that "centre", the English way should be "center" the American way!

Thank you too for the clarification of what was underneath. The 12/16th Hunter River Lancers based in Armidale, New South Wales, a civilian voluntary force within the Australian Army used Staghounds, and as you have pointed out, they are quite similar, as can be seen in the photograph below, taken during an Anzac Day parade in Armidale in the 1950s.

Thought I should add a copy of Meccano's Trade Bulletin dated August 1954 to this Thread for the benefit of those who like this sort of stuff!! :blink:

These Bulletins provide dealers with information on forthcoming models and in this case a small printer's block that is available to enable the dealer to advertise the product in their local newspaper.

I will post a copy of the complete bulletin on the appropriate Thread.

I recently acquired another of these 670 Armoured Cars with a box that has the black bar across the end, blanking out the word STAGHOUND.

The American built Staghound armoured car was a much bigger and heavier vehicle than the British built Daimler armoured car - weighing 14tons compared to 7.6 tons for the Daimler.
