DeAgostini Dinky Toys Collection

Hey everyone!! I'm new to this community - an avid Diecast collector and Dinky Toy addict . I've just started working with De Agostini on the launch of their latest DINKY TOYS classic collection!! Going to be posting pictures of the first couple of magazines and cars - is there anything that anyone would like to see in particular?! Has anyone subscribed yet? Would love to connect with other Dinky Toy collectors and hear what you think of the De Agostini collection!

Well, you did ask, and my reply may be considered controversial, but here goes:

Out of curiosity, I have purchased the first issue Triumph TR2 from a newsagent at the introductory price of £2.99, which is fine. The accompanying publicity and order forms show only the first eight models, plus the free gifts and the Garage , to be delivered on completion of the collection to those paying a supplement on each model - but no mention of how many models make up the collection, and therefore the likely total cost involved. As the DeAgostini Collection was started and subsequently cancelled (in Britain) last year, anyone subscribing is taking a risk, especially as small print tells us that "the items and the order they are received may differ from those shown and are subject to availability". Besides this, binders at £7.99 each, and "special offers" at £12.99 each will be sent automatically. Now, although there is the option to opt out beforehand, some subscribers may not want the binders, but might be interested in some of the offers. Will these be offers be  publicised in advance, or will buyers have to accept the whole contract in order to the receive an unspecified item which they may then want to return at their own expense if they don't want to keep it?

Additionally, doubtless all the models in this series have been covered in the current and previous Atlas collections, albeit in different colours and liveries, but this must surely diminish demand for the models. It is to be hoped that subscribers to this collection do not have the problems that many encountered in dealing with Atlas - I myself was sent two letters threatening legal action for non-payment of a bill which had in fact been paid three months earlier, and was even on record at Atlas.

Turning to the magazine enclosed with the Triumph, there are several inaccuracies and fallacies contained therein. Frequent reference is made to Dinky Toys being made to 1/43 scale - almost all English Dinkies of this period were NOT 1/43. Indeed, simple mathematics based on the specifications quoted in the magazine prove this:- model length 84mm x 43 = 3612mm against 3840mm actual size! The model is therefore 1/45.7 scale, a significant difference. Other errors include the illustration of the Garage showing three cars in front which are actually Spot-On models, made by Meccano's then-rival Tri-Ang Toys but with the caption saying "Dinky Toys supplied separately"!  Also, there is an omission in the article on Triumphs in the Dinky range whereby the number 162 Triumph 1300 is not mentioned. There are probably other mistakes.

Personally, already having a large collection of original Dinky Toys, the DeAgostini (and Atlas) collections are not generally of any great interest to me, although I am not averse to having some at a low price - everyone likes a bargain. I would certainly not take out a subscription based on A) my previous experience with Atlas, B) not knowing in advance which models will be included, and C) not knowing the extent of the collection.  I would almost certainly buy more if the range was publicised and individual models were available either by mail order or preferably through retail dealers on the High Street.

These are my feelings and observations based on my own experiences and preferences, and are not intended to represent those of the DTCA.

 Kevin.

Having seen lists for the DeAgostini issues in Europe not a lot to get excited about. Compared with the Atlas issues I have picked up new colours on the Buick, Thunderbird, Fiat 1800, Dodge Royal, Chevy Corvair (red) and the Renault Minicab. The Dodge looks quite greyish against the cream and brown flash original, and the Thunderbird seats a bit green compared with blue originals and the red a bit brighter. The U.K. Deagostini subscription is not appealing.
